He was the ruler of a small kingdom.

Every day, food would drop from a large shadowy object and into his tiny kingdom and he would gulp it down eagerly. After all, he needed the energy to defend his kingdom from invasions, such as the enemy that laid just next door. He would flare angrily, his gills and fins expanding to show off his ferocity, and his mouth would meet the wall that bordered between his kingdom and his neighbor's. At first, his neighbor responded in kind with angry puffs of his gills and wildly waving fins, but lately, he seemed despondent.

No matter, for HE was strong and he proved that by proudly showing off his colors, even though they dulled every day. But still he was a prideful king, and as king, he was tasked to protect his own territory.

Sometimes, he'd see enemy kings come and go. They'd disappear throughout the day and sometimes even the night while he rested his fins, and a new enemy would appear next to his territory. He didn't question what happened to the previous kings, for after all, kingdoms rise and fall all the time. All he cared about was his own kingdom, and so he continued to bravely protect what was his.

One day, a large two legged giant monster approached his territory. He flared angrily, puffing his gills out and waving his fins, even though he knew he was doomed. How was he to fight off something much larger than himself?

His kingdom shook with the power of this giant and for a short while, his world became darker as the tremors continued. He weaved around and around within the walls of his home, wondering what was to become of him. Was he now food for something greater? Would he lose his home that he had defended for so long?

Then, there was light! He was still in his small kingdom, but now it floated above a much larger land. Wispy trees speckled this land, and the waters seemed clean and warmer than the sullied waters of his own home. He gazed down at this new place, wanting to explore but unable to escape the confines of his home. Oh, how he wanted to move!

He did not know how much time passed before the giant monster made a reappearance. With careful hands, the giant released him into the new land and oh! It was a beautiful place with many trees and places for him to hide when he wanted to rest.

As he explored and became used to this new home, he learned that the giant monster was not a monster at all, but a caretaker. They would feed him and clean the water when it became dirty, even though he did not much like this, but it made breathing easier. He learned the names and habits of his snail and shrimp neighbors, and he guarded his new home from any invaders that would dare threaten to take it away from him.

After all, he is the ruler of a large kingdom.
