cop·pice noun
an area of woodland in which the trees or shrubs are, or formerly were, periodically cut back to ground level to stimulate growth and provide firewood or timber.

the old grove bore healing scars, much like its denizens. revealed in them, there are memories that offer images of scorched earth and gouged plantlife, images that still haunt many. by just brushing aside any leaf, you might even still catch a glimpse of old blemishes: a bit of ash or maybe a hint of charred bark. yet, the past is incredibly well-hidden with lush growth and beautiful, blooming flowers - something that is prided in by the area's caretaker. the creature, rumored by many to be an incarnation of the very life that was lost in previous flame and destruction, exhibits the body of a brilliantly emerald snake, embellished in blooms and growth of all kinds. the entity had arrived without warning, suddenly, slithering between tree stumps and glowing cinders. the creature held a benevolent composure, only bringing with it not malice or death, but life.

in the years to come, plants of all varieties slowly conquered their decimated lands and spread their roots. once the green exploded among the bracken, dismal colors of the old grove, wildlife from tree squirrels to garden snails took residency among the lavish vegetation. smiling, the serpent guardian basked in their achievement. yet, before the thankful woodland creatures could seek out their life giver and bless them with gifts, they had departed.

the snakelike entity had left just as quickly as it had arrived, though its motive remained the same. soon, many lands that were once stripped of their glory were restored. and each time, his work had gone unpraised. the creature did not mind, however, as its reward was truly the revival of the land - their land.
