"What do you mean, 'they don't exist'? Of course they do!"
"But how, Crumple? We know every creature that lives on these rocks and in the water - every creature in the world. And we have no proof at all that these things are real."
"There's no proof that they don't exist either, yet you believe that."
"Come on, Crumple - you could claim that anything is real, if the only basis for believing in it, is that nobody has proved it does not exist!"
Crumple ran off, tears streaming down his face, as the other Crumple-Horned Snorkacks shook their heads in disbelief. As if anything so peculiar could really exist - it was laughable.

Sitting in his small coastal cave, Crumple leant against the wall, his face glistening as the light from the entrance caught his tear-stained fur. How could those other Crumple-Horned Snorkacks just stand there, and say that Luna doesn't exist. If only he could find some kind of proof.... but what would prove to them, that she was real, and not just a figment of his overactive imagination? After all, he did spend a lot of time on his own, preferring solitary peacefulness rather than the bustle of the main tribe areas where everyone was talking at once.

As he was thinking, something cast a shadow across the entrance. Crumple held his breath, waiting to see what had cast the shadow; hardly anything was a risk for the Crumple-Horned Snorkack population, as there were very few creatures that would risk being on the receiving end of a Snorkack horn, but Crumple knew that if Luna was real, then there could easily be something else out there, which would want to chase them.
"Are you in there?" whispered a familiar voice, as a pair of pink Hi-Top shoes came into view. Crumple stood up, and leapt out of the cave to greet her. As she stroked the fur on his head, he closed his eyes. How could his imagination make her appear, and allow his to feel her hands on his fur? Surely this had to be reality?

The evening light was fading into the murky gloom of a moonless night, but Crumple was determined to finish his picture. Carefully pulling the final crayon from the box, he coloured in the blond fur, trailing from her head, down over her shoulders.
If only there was a device that could capture a true likeness of her, he thought as he stuck the picture to the cave wall, with the glue his father had made from tree sap. Luna had been intrigued by the glue, having never come across anything like that before. Crumple suggested that she accompanied him to see his father, to ask for the recipe, however Luna seemed rather shy of meeting the 6 foot tall tribe leader. She felt much happier in Crumple's company; at a mere 4 feet tall, he was still considered a "baby" by the rest of the tribe.

Several weeks later, the cave was covered with pictures of Luna. The only link between the pictures, was her outfit - she was always wearing a pink woollen coat, which she insisted was actually acrylic rather than real wool, pink Hi-Top trainers, a wand in her coat pocket, and what she called radishes dangling from her ears.
She had brought a radish one day, for Crumple to taste.... he ate it in one gulp, and felt like a fire-breathing Hungarian Horntail immediately afterwards.
That night, when he was feeling the after effects, his father had told him to stand well away from the tribe, as his flatulence was keeping the other Snorkacks awake.

Crumple stood proudly in the cave, as the other Crumple-Horned Snorkacks looked at his pictures. His eager smile soon turned into a grimace of disappointment, at the looks of disbelief they were giving him. They all claimed that a paw-drawn picture wasn't proof, nor was the strange elongated paw-print in the cave as that could easily have been where Crumple sat and shuffled his rear on the ground.

How can they insist on real proof thought Crumple as he sat in the centre of the cave, looking at his pictures, if they don't ever specify what that proof would need to be? He knew full well that Luna was real, no matter what the others might say. But he would have to resign himself to the knowledge that only he would believe in Luna, until the others would encouter a human for themselves.... but as they never even bother to look, he knew that would never happen.
