A monstrous mahar emerges from dark forest into a small clearing, just large enough for a neatly made hut next to a pond dotted with lilypads. A xotl sits next to the pond, caressing small carved statues of animals. She looks withered and wounded, but springs forward with a surprising amount of vitality.
"How nice," she says brightly, "someone come to visit me. You need blessing, then you come to the right place. You need something else... maybe we talk. I never do turn away a friend in need. You be in need?"
The visitor sighs and seats herself at the edge of the light. "In great need, yes, I think so. But that is not why I was drawn here. I am looking for something. My... name... is Nakusa."
Cydaea cocks an eye at her. "Nakusa you are. What is it you seek here?"
"Something stolen from someone very powerful and very evil."
The xotl bobs her head without breaking her gaze. "Evil, strong word. You sure?"
Nakusa draws back in surprise. "Well--just look at me," she says, and gestures down the length of her body, each eye blinking as her clawed hand passes near it.
"I see you," Cydaea calmly responds. "You are no evil thing. You born from chaos, and that, not always wrong."
"How can chaos be good?"
"Ah, child. There be all kinds of chaos. Me, here, I try to fight the bad chaos. You cannot say all chaos is bad chaos, some is good chaos, that feeling in your heart when you look at the one you love, that feeling be chaos. That feeling go every which way, pinging all over inside your chest, you feel you gonna burst. Good chaos."
"Jacquel is the bad chaos?"
"He do represent it, oh yes. But I know how to get under his skin."
"Yes... he said you stole something from him." Nakusa smiles slightly, surprising herself.
Cydaea chuckles, turning away to stare across the calm surface of her pond. "Steal? No. Take a thing he think is his, yes, but never steal." Then she turns serious and adds, "Not his at all. It was a soul, and a soul only belong to the one carrying it." A slow smile spreads across her froggy face. "And now, he never find it again. He look for a soul, entire, not the two pieces I make of it."
"You--broke the soul?"
"A soul is not a mirror, broken into pieces that fit together perfectly. More like clay. You pinch, pull, and you have two parts. Some people got a bit more soul than others. Most times you can't tell, some you can. Sometimes people get together and their souls stick, become like one soul in two bodies. Big soul. Maybe once someone took the biggest soul and gave us all the pieces pulled off. We all bits of taffy, yes?"
"Yes," Nakusa says slowly, not entirely convinced but willing to be agreeable. "I can see that what I am looking for is not here, that's certain."
Cydaea nods but says nothing, drawing Nakusa on."I don't think I should... try to explain the division to my master," Nakusa adds quietly.
"That be best." Cydaea turns and reaches behind her to pick up a little bag tied with a bright ribbon. "For luck," she says, and presses it into Nakusa's grasp.
The mahar turns to go, clutching the gift, and says, "Thank you. It is a very generous gift. I know I am unwanted."
Cydaea smiles, her eyes crinkling.
"You may be The Unwanted, but how you got a soul, then? You think on that."
