Cold mist evaporated from his nose as his tail curled up in front of his nose. There weren't very many days when Daikai could sleep past sunrise.Paws close to his weapon, ears alert, he had to have the familiarity of his bow on his body. His ear twitched as the sun barely rose over the horizon. He couldn't help lazily opening one eye and gave up. With a long yawn, he stood up on all fours, stretched and looked up at the tower.
"Guess I better get on the move. Could use some breakfast too..."
The walls, buildings, towers, were his streets. Effortlessly, he leaped from rooftop to rooftop. Jumping, rolling, tumbling, he saw his destination. No, he smelled it.With one more leap on a roof, he doubled rolled over, climbed down a wood ladder, and back leaped right in front of Misha's.
" Spirits, Daikai! You need to stop doing that!," Misha gave a huff and loaded her bread onto a cart.
"I'm sorry," Daikai grinned, it isnt my fault your bread wakes me up every morning." He reached over for a piece of honey cake and felt a sharp pain on his head.
"Oui! Ow, what was that for Misha?"
"That, was for not saying good morning and asking politely," she grinned.
"Well, it doesn't mean you have to crack my skull open, woman", he said rubbing his head.
With a smile he pulled her close and whispered good morning into her ear. He could feel her body stiffen, then softly hugged him back.
"There see, that wasn't so hard now was it?", Misha said pretending to be busy moving bread.
He noticed her eyes seemed watery and glazed. He inwardly smiled to himself and reached for her paw.
"Misha, I don't want you worrying for me, ever."
"Easy for you to say", she brushed his paw off, "I have to be the one to receive news of what happens to you daily and all I get is a good morning. You try waking up every day wondering if there will be another good morning." She didn't realize her paws were shaking.
"Actually, I do," he said licking some honey off his paw.
Misha flashed an angry stare at him.
"Don't you dare joke about it Daikai, don't you dare-"
Misha didn't remember dropping the bread, but she could feel his lips on hers. Their bodies close, and his arms around her back holding her. He tasted like honey.
Daikai pulled away and gazed into her eyes. This time he was serious and intent.
"I will never let anything bad happen to you Misha, ever. When the sun comes up in the morning, I will be here. Just make sure you have honey cake. Because then,
I don't know if I will come," he said with a smirk.
She gently shoved him and smiled. How could she be so in love with a man like this.
"Daikai...," she said softly,"there was something I wanted to ask you, but I... I didn't quite know,oh Spirits strike me, I can't think straight."
"What in the heavens is wrong with you," he laughed and smiled at her.
"I just...wanted to ask you, if I could be with you, I mean after the day is gone, I wanted to know if-"
Daikai stared at her and waited for her to finish, but her words did not come out. She fell to her knees and slumped over on her side.
Daikai saw the arrow protruding from her shoulder. He snapped into reality and dove for her.
"Curse the God's...forgive me, Misha!!," he cradled her as he stroked her hair over her face.
"Daikai...? Don't be afraid anymore...please"
"Misha, no, no, don't talk like that. You are going to be fine...Misha."
She reached up and cupped his face as her eyes slowly closed.
Daikai leaned down and checked her wound. Shoulder, really deep, her breathing seemed stable. She was in shock.
"You there! Fetch a healer, now!"
Daikai leaped onto the ladder and climbed up to the roof. Whoever is responsible for this needed to be dealt with. Now.
Eyes narrowed, he took a deep breathe, and stood perfectly still. He scanned for movement. He saw a shadow leap acrossthe tower beyond the church.
He wasted no time and started to run, feeling the cold air through his ears and body.
He whispered to himself,"Whoever you are, pray. Pray I don't catch up. For when I do, you will be begging for the Spirits to stop your pain. Tell me, where is your God now?"
