Ekhal's soul was standing in a blackened world inside his mind’s eye. For as far as the eye could see, everything was an infinite expansion of darkness. He ran forward as though attempting to escape the enveloping shadows, but it was to no avail. No matter where he tried to run, there was only darkness. Then, a piercing white appeared in front of him in the shape of a maniacal grin. Before he knew it, more of the creature started to take shape until a distorted animal stood before him.

While he could definitely tell that it was supposed to be a fox, the features were extremely distorted and misshapen. Shadowy wisps flew every which way from its body, disappearing into the already darkened area around them. He wondered how it was possible for the body to continue regenerating the lost material before realizing the cloud-like material was being fueled by where it stood.

Below its paws, or where they should have been, was a black smoky mass that curled up, making up its limbs and body before trailing off into a tail and head. He doubted there was anything solid hiding beneath the creature, but it looked tangible enough to touch.

The face was definitely the most detailed compared to everything else. The fox’s snout tapered to a point, as did its ears. Pieces of the umbra flew from its face and re-entered its body later on. The only two things that didn’t move were its jet black eyes and its ever gleaming smile.

What do you want with me?” the imaginary lymas asked him.

Nothing that you don’t want,” the umbra responded. His face appeared to split in two as a grin wormed its way up his wispy, dissipating cheeks.

I want to be rid of you,” he hissed back, eyes narrowed. “Get out of my head!

Unimpressed with the lymas’s persistence, Zil suddenly transformed into a smoky, cloud-like state and was barely visible in the darkness as he swirled around E’s head. “But, Ekhal, I thought you liked being in control. I thought you liked having power…

E gulped as shadowy tendrils reached out to stroke his face and hair. They tugged at his fur and ears. While it wasn’t painful, he didn’t like it. He shuddered and backed away from the black cloud. “Not if it means hurting others,” he said bitterly. “It’s not worth it then…

Surely you want to stop creatures from hurting your beloved Kougie... I can help you do that.

The lymas hung his head and sighed. “You’re right. I do want to stop them from hurting Kougie.” He felt so lost and confused. He wished he had Kougie there with him. Even if she kept things from him and lied about her feelings, she always seemed to know what to do in situations like these. As though harnessing her very thoughts, he looked up at the cloud with a loathsome stare. “But I’m going to be the one taking care of her, and no one else… especially not you.

The cloud swirled angrily in place for a moment before Zil reformed himself into his usual fox-like state. Although the grin was gone, he still looked outwardly calm. However, E could see right past his mask into his dark eyes. “You’re a fool, Ekhal… and I’m going to destroy you.
