God thinks all people like you are hateful

I honestly can’t remember what the context was for when I was introduced to Aurelio Voltaire. I know that the first song that I ever heard with him was When You’re Evil though. I just don’t recall how it came to be that I heard it. All I can think of is that it might have been used as the music for a tribute video for Alucard from the anime Hellsing that I watched at some point probably over ten years ago. Whatever it was, I am glad that it happened because I fell in love with his songs from the first time I heard that song. I subsequently looked up more of his music, and I have been hooked ever since. I love the gothic sound he has, and the darker themes. And that he often does the songs with an obvious glint in his eyes. I really enjoy his humor.
Some of his songs are a bit hit or miss for me, but there are still a lot of songs that I really like. Way too many to fit on a top ten list, that’s for sure. So, a list of honorable mentions is a must. Those songs are as follows: Future Ex Girlfriend, I’m Sorry, Hello Cruel World, Irresponsible, BRAINS!, Caught a Lite Sneeze, The Happy Song, Wall of Pride, Land of the Dead, Cannibal Buffet, Day of the Dead, Dead, The Industrial Revolution, Robber Baron, Stakes and Torches, Happy Birthday My Olde Friend, Coin Operated Goi, Accordion Player, Tempest, This Ship’s Going Down, To the Bottom of the Sea, All Women Are Crazy, Stubborn as a Mule, You Married a Fool, Fear and Anguish, Normal For a Man, On the Road, Innocent, The Mechanical Girl, The Straight Razor Cabaret, Dirtiest Song That Ain’t, Cathouse Tragedy, Oh Lord (Wake the Dead), Screw the Ocampa, The Sexy Data Tango, Worf’s Revenge, Cantina, Raised by Bats, Oh My Goth, The Masquerade, Captains All, Leaves in the Stream, A Romantic Guy, Almost Human, The Headless Waltz, The Man Upstairs, They Know Me, The Night, Dunce and Dead Girls.

God thinks all people like you are an embarrassment to creation

Now we move on to the actual list of my absolute favorite Voltaire songs. And first up is Hate Lives in a Small Town. It’s a fun song that also has so much truth in the lyrics. As someone that has lived in a small town all my life I know for a fact what it’s like, even though it’s definitely not as pronounced, and extreme, in small towns here in Sweden as it seems to be in the US.
In ninth place we have Goodnight Demonslayer. Now this one is by far my favorite lullaby ever. Not only does it include funny tips on how to deal with the monsters that come out every time that the child is left alone in the dark of night, but it also has a good tip at the end about using what you’ve learned about defeating monsters when dealing with the real monsters that are out there.
Next up we have the song that introduced me to Voltaire in the first place, When You’re Evil. It’s fun and unusual. I know that I found it very refreshing when I heard it the first time since I’d never heard anything like it before. Did I mention that it’s a lot of fun? And I love the march-like tango beat of it all.
In seventh place we have The Beast of Pirate’s Bay. This song is both funny and sad at the same time. Well, I say at the same time but it’s funny for the majority of the song and then sad towards the end of it. But it’s also a great way to demonstrate how myths and legends can spread like wildfire when it all started as a tale told by a single person.
In sixth place we have the song The Vampire Club. Not only is this a great song for me because I love vampires, but it’s also a lot of fun to listen to. I always sing along to it whenever I hear it.
Now we move on to fifth place. And here we have Crusade. This is one of those songs that aren’t just great to listen to for the music by itself. It also has good lyrics about not judging a group of people based on what others say about them. Make your own mind up about them. Don’t just listen to the propaganda. That’s how innocent people end up getting hurt.
In fourth place I have one of Voltaire’s Star Trek songs, The U.S.S. Make Sh*t Up. As a fan of Star Trek I absolutely love this song. It’s so much fun and I understand all of the references. When my sister and I watched Star Trek Enterprise not too long ago I kept referencing the song every time they started talking about how to solve different problems that they found themselves in.

Self righteous, judgemental

Now for the top three songs on this list. In third place I have God Thinks. I’m not religious at all, so this song speaks to me more on a level where it makes me nod and agree that these are all things that religious people tend to say. That they somehow know what their God thinks about different things. When in reality it is all just them trying to justify what they themselves think about these things. No God, or Satan, involved in the thought process at all. And the last couple of lines are my favorite. Where he sings that God is neither good nor bad. That God is you and me, God is everything.
In second place I have Hell in a Handbasket. This one is sort of similar to the previous one on my list in the sense that it questions religion in a way. Or rather, it questions the need for there to be a Hell. It’s a fun song and definitely worth a listen for the lyrics alone.
And then there was one. In first place I have Death Death (Devil, Devil, Evil, Evil Song). This is my absolute favorite Voltaire song because it’s not only a lot of fun to listen to and to sing along to, but it also has political and societal commentary in it that I fully agree with.

First to throw the stone

Aurelio Voltaire to me is like a refreshing breeze of music. Which can sound a bit odd, I guess, considering that his style is goth and dark. But to me it’s a refreshing break from all the other music that I listen to, and even more so it’s a break from all the music that gets played on the radio every day. I love that he sings about mythological creatures and jokes about things that many people wouldn’t dare to joke about. At least not when other people can hear it. Voltaire isn’t afraid of that. He’s got his core audience and he knows that they understand his humor. I certainly do, because it’s often very similar to my own. Which is also a reason why I love his songs. Because I find many of them to just be hilarious. Sometimes even the ones with a serious message in them deliver that message with a big side of humor.
I hope to experience much more music from this wonderful individual in the future ♥️

And using his name for your own protection
