Temporary profile by Chen.

There is always that mentor who leaves an indelible imprint on your memory, for one reason or another.

He may have failed you in his class, or, on the opposite end of the spectrum, you may have failed to deliver. Perhaps he was too gentle, turning each one of you into his friends, almost blurring that air of authority about him. Maybe he took a very peculiar and specific distaste for you, which almost traumatized you in a crucial part of your academic formation. He may have even been at the very edge of his sanity, just like a titrimetric analysis a drop, or even half a drop away from its equivalence point, with even so as much as a single extra drop distorting the equilibrium, leading you to an overstep. He might have been insecure, for he knew that you have greatly surpassed him in knowledge, wisdom, or perhaps, both. They might have misunderstood you, and you very well may have misunderstood them.

Much as I would have wanted this to be the story of a professor from the recent or even a distant past, I found that he intrigued me to such an extent that I wish I would not forget about him.

Enter the God of Titration

If any of us had the foresight to mock him in such a way, I have no doubt that it wouldn't have been used as overtly as possible. There probably was a good reason why it had never picked up, and why everyone persisted to call him "fussy" and "OC"(*obsessive-compulsive,) in hushed undertones. His face always radiated with that warm and fuzzy feeling you get when having a sentimental talk with your grandmother, and his voice was quite lively. I can say with certainty that his sparkling eyes and positive disposition would have charmed many girls when he was about our age. While the rest of the class could find every reason to complain and wish we had a different instructor, I saw it as a challenge. In particular, a blessing in disguise.

I'm not going to lie. I also had something to say about him that wasn't entirely positive -- he taught too quickly, and never paused to ask us if we understood a thing he said. He did not want to live vicariously through me, so he did not expose me to more science than he did other interests. He wanted to make sure that I would receive a holistic education and decide on what I'd like to become on my own terms.

Just because he was my father did not mean he went easier on me than the rest of his students. but he did his best to eliminate any biases from his grading system.

TO BE CONTINUED.
