古风 第三十八首
孤兰生幽园,众草共芜没
虽照阳春晖,复悲高秋月
飞霜早淅沥,绿艳恐休歇
若无清风吹,香气为谁发
- - 唐 | 李白孤兰 : Lonely Orchid
Lonely orchid born in a secluded garden; not even the company of a crowd of weeds.
Although bask in spring's sunlight; very sorrowful in early autumn's moon.
The early-morn's flying dew patters; green-color fears resting-fade.
Without the fresh-clear wind blowing, through whose hair will the fragrant air flow?
Tang dynasty: Li Bai (humbly translated by Chen)

Name inspired by Hua Mulan, which Disney based the animated film Mulan (1998). A Chinese live-action Hua Mulan movie was made in 2009. "Mulan" can be literally translated as wood+orchid and as a word means "magnolia". Lan hua (orchids) are also significant in Chinese culture - Confucius praised the orchid as he did jade.

Deforestation in China is more of a modern-day issue, and it is a keystone to environmental pollution and species extinction. While the panda has helped protect bamboo forests, many many species of other creatures are endangered and the public not as aware. One of these species is the spotted deer (Chinese : Meihua Lu or "plum blossom deer" for its adult spots), which was once abundant in most of the eastern Chinese forests but now mainly thriving in Japan. It is highly unlikely to find any more deer or tigers in China's forests and mountains.

Bits of the story are based on elements of (ancient) Chinese culture and traditions, such as marriage, family customs, tea, and more. Most of these traditions are extinct in practice, like most of the exotic creatures are in the wild.

Supernatural encounters are inspired by classic Chinese fantasy/folktale, notably episode 19 of Journey to the West, in which the monk Tangseng gets turned into a tiger by a demon.
