Hydro looked out over the endless water. Most of the time his face was turned to the monitors and switches inside his boat but he loved being able to see the sparkling blue sea. The sight met his eyes like an old friend; alive and familiar but different every day. The sea was very much like an old friend to Hydro. He explored the sea, putting out sonar signals and getting images back. It was like having a conversation. The sea always had an interesting story to tell. In fact, much like old friends, the more time Hydro spent with the sea the closer he was to it. The sea only gave up her secrets to him because he'd spent so much time exploring in it. There was always something new to do, and always a new adventure.

In fact, that brisk and bright morning Hydro was on his way to an uninhabited island with a mountain on one side. He had a feeling that the side of the mountain that dropped off into the water was hiding something and he wanted to find out what it was. He knew he wouldn't use any of his special equipment for this one, other than his diving gear. He wanted to dive down himself and feel the water around him. He wanted to see with his own eyes what this place had to offer. There were a few ancient ruins left in the world. He was smart enough to know that one day everything, from small islands to great nations, would crumble. He was also smart enough to know that there was no way all of the wonder was gone from the world. He was a treasure hunter. He found trunks of jewels and ancient pottery, paintings by artists from whom the world thought they'd seen it all, things easily classified as national treasures.

Of course Hydro was looking for more than just physical things. Money and treasure were nothing to him if he didn't have an adventure. There was a saying that he knew well. 'A brave man may not live forever, but a coward will never live at all' he didn't know who said it first but he'd always remember who said it to him. It was the man who he'd gone on his very first dive with. Before the closeness with the sea, before the adventure, before he had his high tech devices, he had a friend.

It was with great nervousness that he took that first dive into the water. He felt the pressure and the weight as the world turned blue and the clouds and sun disappeared, but far from the picture many have in their imagination, this was no empty water with miles of flat sand beneath. This was another world. There were hills and valleys and paths worn by currents. There were forests of kelp and fields of coral. Everything had a bluish hue but everything had it's own color. Yellow fish poured in like sun rays and red fish bloomed out like roses, blue fish shimmered in the distance like diamonds and fat gray fish ghosted around like floating rocks. More interesting still were the shapes of crumbling buildings in the distance with green walls. He would never forget the green walls. They were the very first question he'd ever had answered about the sea. Even in the present time, in his boat, looking into the water, with the sun breaking over it like light cast by a crystal chandelier, he remembered his wonder at the green walls on the ancient buildings.

He needed, from the moment he'd seen those green walls, to get closer. To go and touch and look at the underwater remains of the forgotten city that lay before him. He made his way closer to the ruins, further away from his mentor's ship and deeper into the ocean. He remembered the way his heart seemed to leap wildly around as if it was as excited as he was. He remembered the burn that pulsed through his veins as his adrenaline raced and his mind juggled imagined answers. As soon as he found the truth about the green walls he needed more. He needed to know more from that point on. He'd always want more, because even more vital to him than treasure and adventure was knowledge.

The walls of the drowned buildings were green because they were covered in vines and what appeared to be a type of undersea moss. In fact, the undersea moss grew and acted much like moss above water did. Hydro had been on a hike once on a mountain and found his way behind a waterfall. People had carved their names into rocks behind it and wherever moss was growing it filled in their names first, making a living message from whoever carved the rocks to whoever would read them. Much to his surprise, there were things carved in the stone walls of the city and the moss had filled the carvings in first. These were a different language than any he'd seen before. That day he found himself wishing more than anything that he could walk through that ancient city and see it as it was before storm or curse brought it under the sea.

He and his mentor did end up finding a tablet that day that helped translate those words. In later days Hydro did in fact dive again and pace the entire city, reading the inscriptions on the walls and pretending that he was one of the city's own. He found coded directions to important buildings, signs advertising a market with food and goods, ancient jewelry and tools lying in baskets. That first treasure may not have been his largest, but to him it was the greatest. The one filled with the most wonder and excitement.

The real world drew him back and he realized he was coming up on his destination. His mentor was no longer with him and he knew a lot more about the sea and sea life, but he always had more to learn. Always. In fact, the more he thought he knew, the more he realized he didn't know. He got ready for his dive and looked over the side of the boat. He took a deep breath to clear his mind and dove right in, hoping that this dive would be just as fruitful as his first.
