“Damn it boy! Where the hell have you been?” the gruff and very drunk voice of an older kumos cried out.
Xan frowned deeply as he dropped his backpack to the floor of the small and dirty foyer. It wasn’t as though he’d really opened the stupid thing anyways. “At school dumbass...” he muttered, avoiding the front room off to the left and heading past it to the kitchen.
“Hey! Didn’t you hear me??” the older kumos shouted with a growl.
“I heard you!” Xan shouted back, slamming the refrigerator door. Stupid f***ing old man.
However, the young seventeen year old kumos didn’t answer him further. His father, who was living on welfare, spent any extra money he got on beer, so he kept himself quite drunk throughout the day. Xan had gotten into the habit of drinking it as well, but only did so when with friends or when his father was passed out in the front room. The older kumos had been a stone cold drunk as long as Xan could remember- and probably before that. He thinks there was a time that his father got sober, but that was only so he could qualify for welfare. He’d been living on it ever since. Sure, he was supposed to be getting a job, he was supposed to be trying to turn his life around- but suppose to and actualities were two very different things.

Grabbing himself the bag of chips, Xan boarded himself up in his room, locking his door to keep his father out and went to his stereo, turning it on and turning it up. He didn’t care if his father banged on the wall, he just wanted an escape. He had ways of escaping his travesty of a life anyways and while he sat in his room, he did just that. He couldn’t exactly leave this house- he had nowhere else to go and despite the crap he had to put up with, it was better than living on the streets.

Seven o’clock rolled around and Xan found himself coming out of his room to get some dinner. He never expected his father to cook anything, not that he ever bought any food anyways, so Xan just went to make a sandwich. He was probably going to need to get a job just so he didn’t starve to death in his own house. Just as he picked up his sandwich and started for his room, he was stopped by the larger burlier kumos that was his father who grabbed Xan’s shoulder and shoved him back into the kitchen.
“Sit down boy.” he growled, that warning look in his eye keeping Xan from snarling in return.
Obeying, Xan sat at the little kitchen table, not sure what was going on. What did he do? He didn’t think his dad could smell the pot when he was drunk, not that he thought his dad cared anyways- his own cigarettes usually drowned out the smell. Not saying anything, Xan set down his sandwich on the not so clean table top and waited, not making eye contact, not sure what to expect.
“I got a call from your principle earlier today. Seems you’ve been skipping class a lot.” he stated.
Was his father actually caring? At this, Xan looked up at his father in utter confusion. Since when did he care what Xan did and didn’t do? How had he been sober enough to retain this information in the first place?
“He said he wants you to make up the classes by doing community service. Saturday, staring at eight AM.” his father said, narrowing his eyes a little at Xan.
Shrinking back a little, Xan glanced at his sandwich, but didn’t reach for it, afraid his father might use the opportunity to break his arm. “Um, okay. I didn’t know...”
But before he could finish his sentence he got an extreme shock with the back of his father’s hand striking his cheek, knocking him askew on his chair. Catching himself, Xan looked up at his father again with more shock. He'd never been hit like that before; spanked when he was a kid sure, but never hit upside the head.
“You stupid little asshole! I always knew you’d turn out to be a delinquent! Your damn principle wants to meet me! Talk to me and make sure everything is okay at home! I gotta take your sorry ass into the school and explain what the f*** is wrong with you!”
Righting himself in his chair, Xan looked down, his breathing a bit more labored as he stared at the dirty old tile beneath his feet.
“What have you got to say for yourself??” his father shouted at him again.
Frowning, gritting his teeth a little, Xan looked up at his father, brows turned down. Standing up then, Xan shoved his drunken father hard in the chest. “F*** YOU OLD MAN!!” he said and darted around his father who stumbled back, uneasy from being full of booze and grabbing his backpack off the floor, Xan ran out through the front door and bolted down the street, not even looking back, even at hearing his father’s bellows from down the street.

Eventually Xan would have to go home, but he wouldn’t that night, at least not any time before he was certain his father would be totally passed out from his heavy drinking. So instead, Xan crashed at his friend’s house. He’d known Elijah since he was a toddler and they’d been through everything together, even both having watched their parent’s divorce. Fortunately for Eli, he got to stay with his mother who was a good person; though she worked a lot to make sure they had food and a roof over their heads. She was a night nurse, which made good money, but because of it, she was usually asleep during the afternoon’s and gone all night; it worked out great for Eli and Xan though.
Coming into the house without even knocking, he headed into the living room, tossing his backpack to the floor and plopped down onto the couch next to his best friend.
“Dad bein’ a dick again?” Eli asked as he passed something to Xan who took a slow drag, sighing a little with a nod as he let the drug help him relax.
“Of course, he’s always a dick. I can’t wait to get out of there…” he sighed a little. He was sure his friend would let him crash there all the time, but his father would come looking for him, he was sure. Xan was an asset to his welfare checks, getting him more money for being a dependent, so if Xan left and it was legally known, he would lose that extra money that he spent on drink instead of food.
“We gona go out tonight then? Gona be a killer rave at the point.” Eli said, taking the rolled herb and taking a drag on it as well.
“Yeah, for sure. I’ll have to borrow some of your shit though, all my clothes are back at my house and I ain’t gona go back there just for some threads.” Xan stated, frowning a little.
“No worries. My mom leaves for work about nine, the rave starts at ten. You can stay for dinner too.”
“Gee, thanks.” Xan smirked a little, already feeling more relaxed with the mix of his best friend at his side and the herb they shared smoking.

The rest of the day went by far more relaxing than it would have been had he hid out in his room at home. He had fun playing video games, laughing, talking about weird things with his friend, having dinner with Eli and his mom and then after she left to work as they worked on homework, the two soon went into his room to get ready for the rave they’d be heading to for the night. After all, it didn’t matter if it was a school night when there was fun to be had and no adults around to stop them. With the laser lights, loud music and crowd of people jumping around, it was the prefect escape from the ordinary and depressing existence he had to deal with every day.
Still, eventually he would buckle down and graduate from school and get a job so he could get out of that house and never look back. In the meantime- he had other means of escape- but his favorite involved a lot of bright colors.
