The Consumer (and keeper) Of Souls
He is the shadows. Inali can disappear into the darkness with practiced ease. The Jollin creeps through the brush, stalking his prey. A wounded Darkonite. The shadows flicker, and he jumps back. A reborn Darkonite. The Jollin grimaces. Fire brings light. It brings light. He does not appreciate its qualities. Perhaps he should ignore this one. Move on to another victim. He can sense a elderly Sheeta a mere few miles away close to its end.

The Darkonite collapses, and Inali's train of thought is broken. No, he wasn't about to back down. Inali loves a challenge, and not only was fire his least favorite element, Darkonites were near the bottom of his list of easy targets. The demon creeps forward, for the first time leaving the shadows. His burning eyes seem to glow brighter as he gazes at his conquest, the moonlight glinting off his pointed teeth.

"You seem to be wounded, my friend," he barks.

The Darkonite glances at the newcomer, panting, wheezing, but seemingly unfazed. "Leave," he breathes.

Inali chuckles. "Ah, but you see, you have something I desire," he whispers, circling the reborn animal at a safe distance. "Your soul will sustain me for quite some time. Reborn souls have something special about them. They're... stronger."

"Get away from me, Jollin," the other growls. "Let me die in peace."

Inali sits, his tail flicking back and forth with delight. "I have all night, you know. All eternity, in fact, to wait."

The Darkonite tries to get up, but fails. Silence descends upon the both of them, and after a long moment of the only sound being the painful breaths of the cat-like creature, it speaks. "I'll make you a deal."

The Jollin's ears twitch and he smirks. "Go on..."

... a few years later ...

Inali licks his lips, eyes glowing brighter than a few minutes previous as the soul he had just consumed fills his very being. It warms him from the inside. He feels stronger. Swifter. Brighter. He laughs, a soft, wheezing sound, and trots off in the direction from which he came. The Jollin pauses as he enters the brush near his cave. The shadows are flickering. Fire.

"Inali!" comes a growling voice. "I know you're there."

"Destler," Inali purrs as he steps into the flickering firelight. "How... pleasant to see you." He slinks forward slowly, always cautious of the much bigger, much bulkier animal. "And what is it I can help you with on this beautiful night?"

"I want to see it," Destler mutters, expression dark.

Inali all but rolls his eyes and slips into the entrance of his cave, lit only by a few fireflies he had caught at the beginning of that evening. He finds what it is the Darkonite had asked for and snatches it up with his mouth. After carrying it out to the entrance, he sets it carefully on the ground. "As per our agreement," he murmurs, sitting proudly next to the plushie. Which had been kept in perfect condition, mind you. "I still have it. It's still safe."

Destler sniffs the item, then huffs, standing up to his full height and glaring at the Jollin. "Very well, then," he states, his demeanor a lot less stiff now that he has seen what he had come for. "As per our agreement," he begins, mocking the fox-like creature, "is there anything you need my assistance in?"

Inali waves a paw at the other, shaking his head. "No," he answers simply. "I've been fed well this year. I need no help catching my prey. Especially not these days, with the way everyone seems to be turning on each other. The souls are not as delicious as they used to be, but they are plentiful."

Destler scoffs, wrinkling his nose. "You are a disgusting creature."

The Jollin grins, a frightening gesture which shows his gleaming white canines. "Be careful, kitty-cat. This disgusting creature is in possession of your soul."

Once the Darkonite has left, Jollin retreats into his home only to be greeted by a soft yip and the sound of tiny paws against the rocky ground. Inali smiles, though it is a much less frightening expression than the one earlier. "Astilv, my darling," he whispers, leaning down to set the plushie aside in order to nuzzle his precious minion. "My only friend. Go. Play outside." As the Pyrefox bounds towards the entrance, Inali calls after him. "But only for an hour!" The soft glow of the minion fades as he disappeared from the cave. Inali sighs. "Be safe, little one. The world is a treacherous place for such an innocent soul."
