Jameel was seated in front of a mirror gazing at his reflection from every possible angle. His smoky gray eyes scanned over his face, in his consistent morning ritual. Ordinarily his olive toned skin was blemish free, but not today. A small red spot, barely noticeable to anyone but himself had sprouted up overnight. Jameel's usually calm face was contorted into a look of full blown panic. "No. No. No. This cannot be!" His cries echoed through the tranquil halls. Swiftly he stood from his vanity and the bench clattered to the floor behind him as he ran from the room and into his mothers lounge. Unfazed by her son’s actions, she casually glanced up at him as he burst through the doors, "Ommy I am disfigured and ugly!, How will I ever find the perfect bride to be now?”, He pointed dramatically at the offending spot. He collapsed at her feet as his eyes became glossy and tears began to well. Nadia, his mother, let out a soft sigh and pursed her lips for a moment, "Dear, sweet Jameel, Don't be so dramatic. You are neither ugly or disfigured. It’s just a simple blemish that will be gone in a short time." She rested a hand on her son's shoulder in comfort. Sure enough a few days later, Jameel was once again seated at his mirror examining his face and he could no longer find a single trace of the spot. That pleased him greatly.

As months came and went, his mother urged Jameel to try and find a suitor, someone to take as his wife and future sultana. Nadia sent word to the surrounding areas about her son and requested any interested parties to appear in their home to meet the prince. Four days later, a line of women formed at the main entrance of Jameel's palace. One by one he met every woman, and turned each of them away unimpressed by them. Nadia again sent word to gather a new line up for Jameel to choose from. The next week more Princess interested in the prince arrived and waited for their chance to meet him. Jameel met each of them one on one and he became rather bored of them all. The last women to enter caught Jameel's eye. She was tall with deep caramel skin. Her ebony hair was tightly coiled atop her head adorned with jewels and baubles. Her eyes were the most stunning shade of blue that Jameel had ever seen. She strolled across the marble floor with such grace and seduction in each step, it was hypnotizing.

"Pleasure to meet you Prince Jameel, My name is Dalal and I have come a long way in hopes of being your bride." her voice was airy and enticing. It took everything Jameel had not to beg her to speak of anything, just so he could hear her voice. She bowed slightly as she reached the thrones that the sultana and prince sat upon. She was dressed in dark purple fabric studded with small diamonds that glinted in the light. It was like she reached into the night sky and pulled a portion of it down to wrap around her body so effortlessly. She stood before Nadia and Jameel as they exchanged looks, he could not stop glancing at Dalal. "Pleasure to meet you, Dalal", Nadia was first to break the silence that had washed over the room. Jameel echoed his mother’s words with a sheepish smile, which was completely unlike him. Nadia excused herself to leave Jameel and Dalal to talk and get to know each other.

Jameel stood from his throne and stole a quick glance at his hand mirror that was sitting beside him on a small pedestal. He smiled again as he almost tripped down the few steps leading to Dalal. He held out his hand as he approached her and she placed her hand in his. They walked wordlessly around the thrones and out into the sprawling gardens. As they walked Dalal's mind was busy scheming. She only wanted to marry the prince to be in line to have the throne and rule the land. They walked along still silent as they neared a menagerie surrounded by a reflective pool. They entered and sat on the marble bench and finally began talking about Jameel's favorite topic, himself. Dalal humored him and went along with it for a while. As the sun began to set and Jameel was still rambling on about himself, Dalal no longer showed interest in his spieling and yawned quite blatantly. Jameel did not approve of her actions. "No. This will not work. I am sorry but you must leave my palace at once!", his voice rang off the walls and startled quite a few of the animals surrounding them. One of the peacocks was startled into fanning his feathers and attempting to intimidate Jameel.

Jameel stood and attempted to storm away, but Dalal took hold of his hand and in a last ditch effort tried to salvage her plan, "I am sorry Prince Jameel, I have traveled very far and did not sleep very much. I was too excited to meet you!", she returned to her airy voice hoping it would stop him. Jameel turned back slightly and jerked his hand from her grip with a menacing gaze. Straightening himself out, he again order her out of the palace without a second glance. Dalal grew furious as she watched him walk away. She rose to her feet and started after him, still in her angered state, she walked with such grace. Jameel had reached the large doors back into the palace just as Dalal reached the steps, "YOU INSOLENT FOOL, YOU'LL REGRET THIS", her voice boomed. Jameel stopped in his tracks, feeling as though the floor beneath him shook. He turned around slowly in time to see Dalal's hands begin to glow a faint blue color. A small wind began to swirl around her, which caused her hair to come undone and whip around her head. Her eyes were closed at first, but soon they snapped open, they too were glowing a faint blue.

Jameel found he was unable to move at all, he couldn't even speak. Dalal was laughing now, and it echoed throughout the courtyard she stood in. "I told you that you would regret ordering me away!”, she sneered at him before launching into a string of words that Jameel couldn't understand. As she yammered on, Dalal's hands were held in front of her as if she was holding something invisible. Soon a pale blue orb began to form and it grew to the size of her head. Jameel's eyes grew wide in fear, still unable to move or scream. Dalal moved her hands away and the orb hovered in front of her for a moment, before splitting into three orbs of the same size. She was laughing again, this time more manically, and she wondered for a moment, how the sultana had not came to see what all the commotion was. Jameel closed his eyes and took a deep breath as he tried to break free from whatever was keeping him captive, but it was futile. Dalal saw his pathetic attempt, "It is no use. You cannot break my charm...now prepare to die.", as she finished speaking she thrust her hands out, sending the three orbs and the swirling wind soaring towards Jameel.

The wind began whipping around him violently, and the orbs swirled with it. Jameel felt himself getting slightly dizzy and weak. He opened his eyes and everything seemed to be hazy and spinning. Just when he thought he couldn't take anymore, the orbs aligned and slammed into him, one at his feet, one at his chest and one at his head. He mentally cried out as a few tears managed to slip down his face. His vision went dark for a moment, but came back enough to see what looked like a shard of an orb ricochet off his crown and soar towards Dalal, who was caught off guard as it slammed into her chest. She shrieked and crumpled to the ground her eyes closed and she didn't move any longer. Jameel felt very strange now, his body was tingling, and he was engulfed by the pale blue light. It seemed to be radiating from within himself.

The odd sensation got even more peculiar as he felt like he was shrinking. He found himself free to move now and he ran into the palace calling out, "OMMY! OMMY WHERE ARE YOU!?", his panicked voice was noticeably higher pitched. His run turned into a strange trot with each step he took. The glowing waned and his skin began to prickle, like he was being poked all over with quills. Jameel looked down at his hands and arms, which slowly melted away into wings and feathers of brown and black. He noticed his legs were no longer human they looked much like that of a bird. He was turning into a peacock. As he came to the realization, from his back sprouted the famed plumage of iridescent tail feathers. He cried out, still with a human voice, albeit higher pitched. He was no longer glowing and he no longer felt the tingling. He had completely transformed from human to peafowl. He began to weep from both sadness and happiness. He was no longer his beautiful human self, but at least he was alive. He strutted around the room and caught his reflection in the floor. The only tell tale sign of his former self was the crown still perched atop his head.
