Born and raised in Oreburgh City, Sinnoh, Jarret has always had a love for all things mining and underground. He has fond memories of a childhood spent exploring the city's famous mine while his father worked nearby, the family's Machop and Bibarel guarding Jarret and keeping him from wandering too far. Since becoming an official Pokémon trainer, Jarret has continued to explore and dig underground, managing to unearth a few Pokémon fossils in the process.

Jarret prefers mining and learning more about Sinnoh's rich history and lore over challenging Pokémon League Gyms. There is an exception to his general noncompetitive rule, though: he has a fierce rivalry with Kalena and desperately wants to defeat her in battle one day. Jarret's tendency toward neuroticism is most strongly shown in this rivalry; he often becomes fixated on trying to one-up Kalena. While he genuinely enjoys collecting and raising Pokémon, a large percentage of Jarret's motivation for training his team harder comes from his desire to defeat Kalena.

Kalena
is Jarret's one and only rival, a title that she wears with amused pride. Rude, competitive Kalena has infuriated Jarret since what seems like the moment they met. She has always acted belittling toward him, treating him like an annoying child despite only being a few months older than him.

Kalena is also consistently Jarret's superior in battle, a fact that frustrates him as much as it entertains her. No matter how much effort Jarret has put into training his team or what strategies he employs, he always loses against her; and it doesn't help that she seems to think of him more as an amusing distraction than a real challenge, which can cause Jarret to lose focus and give his Pokémon poor orders in the heat of battle. There have been times when Jarret has actually come close to getting the best of Kalena in battle, but he hasn't yet quite managed to succeed, as she's always happy to remind him.

Jewel the female Shieldon
bold nature, strong willed

Jewel was revived from the very first Pokémon fossil that Jarret ever dug up, found on a special trip to the Underground for his eighth birthday. She lived together with him and his family as a spoiled pet for a few years before he became an official trainer, and served in place of a traditional starter. The two have been extremely close from the moment they met, partners and best friends.

Fearless and loyal, Jewel is small but a force to be reckoned with. She is adventurous by nature, moreso than her trainer, and loves both battling and exploration.
Clyde the male Krokorok
adamant nature, quick tempered

A former member of a wild Pokémon gang, Clyde was captured by a trainer in Unova and later traded over to Jarret. While he has been with Jarret for a few years now, Clyde still tends to be difficult to manage; up until recently, he frequently bullied the other Pokémon, and only stopped after developing a healthy fear of Hemlock and her poison.

Despite his ornery personality, Clyde has long-since proven himself in battle, and over time developed a grudging respect for his trainer and fellow Pokémon. He dislikes showing that respect, though, preferring to give off an air of cool aloofness.
Rusty the Bronzor
quiet nature, good endurance

Rusty was captured during a particularly memorable experience in Wayward Cave, where it appeared before a mildly lost Jarret and actually ended up helping him to find his way out. While not quite a loner, it doesn't tend to be very communicative and is something of a mystery to the other Pokémon; however, it is also kind and loyal, and likes to protect those weaker than itself.

Although small and unevolved, Rusty harbors a great deal of psychic power. Its strength alone has led Jarret to numerous victories. He considers Rusty a staple of the team.
Hemlock the female Toxicroak
relaxed nature, takes plenty of siestas

An unflappable Toxicroak captured on Jarret's first (and so far only) trip to the Great Marsh, Hemlock is serene and laidback, even seeming lazy at times. For all that she is usually mellow, though, she has no tolerance for bullying; she is largely responsible for Clyde mellowing out over time, having taken to jabbing him with a knuckle claw until he stopped picking on the weaker Pokémon.

Despite Hemlock's generally relaxed personality, she can be downright savage in battle. She genuinely enjoys fighting... but always needs a nice, long rest after even a short battle.
Skipper the male Mudkip
sassy nature, somewhat of a clown

Obtained through a trade with a traveling trainer, Skipper is a young but lively Mudkip, full of energy and spirit. While ultimately obedient, he has a tendency to backtalk, and especially loves sassing his trainer while other Pokémon are around to entertain; he likes being around others most of all when he is the center of attention.

Skipper loves his new family but is particularly fond of Jewel, who he imprinted on like a baby Ducklett and likes to follow around. He also adores Jarret's hat, which Jarret grudgingly lets him wear from time to time.
Archie the male Archen
naughty nature, highly curious

The newest fossil Pokémon to be found and revived by Jarret, Archie is the youngest of the team, though perhaps the biggest handful of them all. Curious to a fault, Archie has a boundless supply of energy that he prefers to put toward getting into things. He loves to climb, hop from place to place, and shred things with his beak and claws.

Archie isn't very skilled with battling, too young and easily distracted, but shows a surprising amount of interest and works hard at training. For all his mischief, the Archen can be quite eager to please; he is always looking for attention, good or bad.
Petra the female Geodude
serious nature, somewhat stubborn

Petra was the very first Pokémon that Jarret caught, short hours after he had received his Pokédex and Pokétch and decided to venture into Oreburgh Mine again, an official trainer at last. Unfortunately, Petra turned out to be fairly weak in battle, and in fact has a distaste for fighting. She lives at home with Jarret's parents, often helping them out with work.

Petra is quite serious when it comes to personality; she has no time for nonsense and refuses to engage in any tomfoolery with the other Pokémon. She does, however, have plenty of time for poffins, her very favorite treat.
Gerald the male East Sea Gastrodon
docile nature, likes to relax

Laidback, obedient Gerald was the first Pokémon of Jarret's that ever evolved, and as such he is very special to Jarret. He prefers the stay-at-home life over that of an active battler, though; for all that he's willing to battle when necessary, he has something of a lazy streak and would much rather relax at home than travel.

Gerald is something of an older brother to the younger Pokémon, Shelly especially, his agreeable nature making him hard to dislike. He likes to help out when possible and often assists Jarret's parents with any chores that he can.
Shelly the female West Sea Shellos
jolly nature, loves to eat

While Shelly is agreeable and always ready to cheerfully try her best in battle, her tendency to be easily distracted and oblivious has kept her on the sidelines. She's mostly content with that, though she does envy Gerald at times; sometimes she wishes she could properly match him again by evolving as well.

Like the other Pokémon not kept in Jarret's party, Shelly resides at home with his parents. She adores Jarret's mother best of anyone; her favorite thing to do is "assist" her with baking. (Shelly is an excellent poffin taste-tester.)
Aquaria the female Finneon
rash nature, somewhat vain

Jarret likes to consider Aquaria the first "real" Pokémon that he fished up; he prefers to pretend that all those Magikarp were just practice. She lives in a fairly large pond with Jarret's parents' several Magikarps as well as Jarret's Whiscash, and she often wishes she could be the only fish in the pond.

Aquaria is energetic and quick to act, surprisingly feisty and full of personality for such a small fish. She is better-suited to Contests than battle; she loves to show off her beautifully glowing form after a long day of soaking up sunlight, and has a general knack for performance.
Wake the male Whiscash
mild nature, often lost in thought

Wake spends most of his time sleeping in the mud at the bottom of the pond, awakening only at night to eat and, perhaps, annoy the other fish. He doesn't appear to be as territorial as Whiscash are generally known to be, as he has never tried to attack or chase off the other pond Pokémon; however, Jarret and his family often wonder if some of Wake's obliviousness is affected rather than genuine, as his habit of bumping into the others once resulted in an ill-considered escape attempt from Aquaria. (Thankfully, Jarret was visiting and happened to be nearby to get her back into the water, but he's always wondered after that little incident.)
Claw the male Armaldo
gentle nature, impetuous and silly

Claw looks formidable and is quite the powerhouse, but outside of battle he's an absolute goofball of an Armaldo. He loves poffins and getting the tops of his eyes rubbed, and will readily beg for both. He is also very affectionate and can be quite cuddly, especially with the younger Pokémon.

On the battlefield, however, Claw is all business; his gentle demeanor will disappear in an instant and he has no qualms with unleashing his full strength against any opponent. The effect tends to be ruined by his eager desire for praise, however; he always expects plenty of extra attention after a battle.
Cobalt the female Nosepass
bashful nature, alert to sounds

An unassuming, shy Pokémon that Jarret caught in Mt. Coronet, Cobalt isn't strictly unfriendly but does tend to keep to herself. She is the most recent capture of all Jarret's Pokémon and hasn't yet warmed up to any of her new family members; in fact, she is outright timid around the more energetic ones such as Skipper and Archie.

Cobalt tends to be somewhat easy to startle, perhaps a result of living so long deep within a cave where few other creatures would disturb her. It can be hard to pick up on, though, as even her surprised reactions are quiet.
