“We’re going on a bear hunt, we’re going on a bear hunt.”
“FOSS, no! I told you. If you’re not going to play properly, you can’t play with us! We’re going on a treasure hunt around Veta Lake to find the long lost family treasure of Saggitarius! NO BEARS.”
Blowing a big raspberry at the boys and then whispering to herself ‘there are totally bears in the woods’, Foss skips off to her backpack, picking it up and putting it on while falling back in line behind Jethroe and Rango. “But you said we’d take turns deciding what to play. When is it MY turn?”
“C’mon Foss, it’s a treasure hunt today. Tomorrow it’s my turn and we’re going to play cowboys. We’re going to protect the treasure from the baddies! Then it’s your turn to pick what we’re going to do” said Rango, trying to reason with the infuriating kerubi.
Softly humming a tune, Foss dutifully, but aimlessly, follows on behind the boys.
Pulling out a carefully preserved map yet still looking a little rough around the edges, Jethroe carefully unrolls it and holds it out in front of him. According to old Subetan legends, Saggitarius’ great, great, great grandfather, worried his fortune may not be maintained, buried a large treasure chest full of gold, jewels and gemstones. As he was getting old and his memory fading, he drew a map so he, or one of his descendants, could retrace his steps and reclaim the treasure. Having marked the spot with a large, red ‘X’, Jethroe was clear where he needed to end up.
To the kids, they had been hiking the Veta Lake mountains for weeks carefully following the wrinkled, old map. In reality, it had been little more than an hour. Their search for untold riches failing and with their supplies of strawberry milk and trail mix quickly running out, the three were quickly losing hope.
Foss, most put out for still being on this treasure hunt, started to make a noise Jethroe and Rango were dreading. “Uggghhh! We’re not going to find it. Let’s go home.”
Just as Foss finished whining, Jethroe spotted it. Hidden at the bottom of a large, blue spruce tree, an ‘X’ carved into the trunk.
“RANGO. FOSS. LOOK!”
Running to the tree, they all got out their trowels and started digging. They soon came across a large, wooden chest. Carefully lifting it out, they all stepped back admiring the intricate details on the wood.
“Jethroe, you open it,” Rango said.
Jethroe slowly crept forward and knelt down in front of the treasure chest. Tentatively reaching his hand out to open the lid, he flicked the latch open and just as he went to open the lid they were interrupted …
“BOYS, FOSS. DINNER TIME. INSIDE NOW.”
