"Mamá, I know you're scared but please, stay inside." Juan assured his mother as he cupped the payphone near his mouth so she could hear him over the noise of sirens. "And please don't let papá do anything stupid. I'm on my way to you now so just board up the house and stay safe. I will be there soon."
He hung up the phone and stepped out of the phonebooth. Emergency response vehicles sped down the street. Juan pulled up his jacket and made sure his backpack was secure. As he stood back from the street, he watched as other people looted and rioted. Everyone had gone mad in the wake of this unknown disaster.
Juan began walking over the rubble and around the fires that had come from blown gas mains and fallen building. He pulled his scarf up over his mouth and nose to shield himself from the smoke and stinging smells of chaos. He knew he had to stay low and move fast. Trusting anyone right now would be suicide.
He had always been a resourceful boy; cautious of his surroundings. Despite his anxieties, he left home to attend a community college to expand his horizons. His mother and father lived a few cities away, so unless he could find a functioning car to take him there, the walk would take him several days.
