Judy scurried across the barren landscape, hoping that she wouldn’t be seen by any predators as she tried to find something to eat. Plants were sparse out here, especially at this time of year so it was particularly dangerous. She ran as fast as she could, but unfortunately it wasn’t fast enough. Something big and dark swooped down from above and grabbed her with sharp talons.
So much for that, she thought as she died.
She woke up to the smell of sulfur and brimstone. She slowly opened her eyes only to see fires all around her, interspersed with dark shapes. As her eyes began to focus more, the shapes morphed into terrifying demonic creatures with glowing red eyes, all of them leering at her. She cowered.
With a whoop, the closest demon grabbed her and picked her up. Cradling her in its arms, the demon began to run, and from what she could tell, the entire pack was running as well. Down they went, further and further until suddenly, they stopped.
She was gently lowered to the ground, and when she looked up, the whole group of demons was staring at her quizzically.
The one who had carried her down then spoke in a deep, rumbling voice.
“Welcome to hell, little one. You’re not being punished, it’s just that... we don’t know what this is. You were the first soul to pass by and, umm, we thought you might know.”
The demons in front of her moved aside, revealing the object of their confusion.
It was a flower. Not a perfect flower, by any means, it was somewhat raggedy, but a flower nonetheless.
She explained, and as she did, the demon's faces lit up. They had all heard of flowers, but none had ever seen one close up before. They stared at it reverentially, but none dared to touch it. A few looked up at Judy, their contorted faces quizzical.
And without a word, Judy became the keeper of the lone flower to grow in hell.
