Howls from the local Kumos broke the stillness of the night, closely followed by a distant rumble of thunder. Kanis knew each stage of an impending storm like the back of her paw: she was the guardian of storms after all, and all thunderstorm related things were under her control. Rain, lightning and thunder would all jump at her command, although flooding was a matter for another guardian - once the storm had passed over, Kanis' job was done until the next storm.
She flicked her ears towards the rumbles of thunder, timing each rumble to ensure it conformed to the standards she had set. Not too close after the previous rumble, not approaching too quickly, and nothing that would risk damage to any of the Glade that she called home.
The fur on her back started to stand on end as the static electricity from the storm grew closer, but the thunder was still too quiet, too far away for this amount of electricity. Kanis twitched her nose a few times, trying to bring the storm back to a lower intensity, but the sudden flash of lightning over Delphi Beach made her realise this storm was not going to co-operate.
As if it had a mind of its own, the distant rumbles grew slowly closer, the lightning streaking across the sky illuminating everything in its path, allowing the residents of Peka Glade to see the worried look on the storm guardian's face.
There was only one thing which might calm this storm before it reached the peak of dangerous levels, but that required Kanis' full concentration, and the seemingly constant flashes of lightning were disrupting her thought processes as she stood staring at the storm.
The local Kumos had stopped howling, and was frantically barking at the thunder now, each rumble hardly finishing before the next rumble began. Suddenly a vibrant flash of lightning lit the trees of Peka Glade, followed almost instantly by an overhead crack of thunder. The Kumos yelped with fright and went quiet - Kanis hoped he'd run into the safety of his house and not remained outside; only storm guardians should be out in storms this severe, and even then only rarely, as their entire occupation was to keep storms like this at bay.
Kanis flicked her ears over her eyes to blot out the brightness of the lightning, in an attempt to keep control over Peka Glade's safety, but another vibrant overhead flash of lightning caused her to screw her eyes tightly shut, and the intense crack of thunder left a ringing in her ears.
Tears were running down her face, splashing over her fur; she'd lost control of this storm completely. She'd never known a guardian be removed from their job before, but allowing such a fierce storm to approach was an unforgivable act.
Standing in the Glade, the tears on her fur were joined by torrential rain, as if the clouds were crying with her, the water forming rivers down her front.
The thunder started getting quieter, the lightning less intense, as the storm made its way out to sea, but Kanis remained where she was - officially she should be reporting an out-of-control storm to the SAI for public awareness, but there was nothing to gain, unless she wanted to be publicly humiliated by being the very first guardian to lose her job.
Several hours later, or maybe it was just minutes, Kanis felt the sloppy lick of a Kumos tongue on her neck. Her fur sparked slightly with the shock, as she turned and spotted the local Kumos sitting next to her, his head quizzically on one side. Staring at him for a few seconds, she noticed the river of water on his fur, recognising the trademark look of a fellow guardian; this must be the flood guardian she had heard so much about, but never met before, as it was such a rare occurrence for any of them to meet at headquarters together.
He flicked his head towards Veta Lake, and his ears drooped at the sight of so much of the fields covered in water. Looking back at Kanis, she realised she wasn't the only guardian to be caught out by the night's storm; this could only be the act of one thing in Subeta, something which none of the guardians could ever control; the Tempest.
