A surreal silence surrounded the mountain top settlement that Kei had called his home for eight years now. The wind had become still and icy just as it usually did. Tiny snowflakes floated unmoving as if suspended by strings from above. Even the song birds had ended their serenade for this moment that seemed to be repeating itself endlessly.
Kei daren't take a breath in his present stance for fear of disrupting the perfect flow of energy gathering before him. It had taken years to locate the ancient scrolls of Namsai back at central and even longer to decipher the decrepit scripture, but neither of these compared to the task of mastering what the scrolls entailed. A flawless production of energy, controlled without the precision of hand movements, but with ones mind. Kei had feared his body would give out before his will did, but finally he had managed to do it a year and a half ago.
A minuscule spark had erupted from within him, exploding in milliseconds without the concrete focus needed to keep it stable. It was beautiful. It was as if he had stopped the whole world in it's tracks. That glimpse of perfect serenity was enough for Kei to know that he could do it. And so he had. He dedicated hours everyday to meditating to calm his mind, training his body as it grew more and more familiar with the bizarre feeling. It was as if something, some fearsome being was sucking the life out of him. The scrolls never mentioned how it was meant to feel, but deep inside of him he knew that this was how it should be. However, they did explain the techniques purpose; to channel ones spirit, extracting the pure energy to call upon The Hahkra, a prophet-like being that would appear before each individual in a different form. Most were never able to summon this creature despite devoting their lives, sometimes even their sanity to the cause, or so Kei had been told by the Maestrals when he could not contain his curiosity any longer.
His brow furrowed in concentration as he stared at the empty patch of grass in front of him, willing the spirit creature to join him on his lonely mountain top. It may have just been a play of the light, but Kei could have sworn he could see his energy flowing through the air as if had become a tangible substance. All around him tiny specks of light drifted towards one point. Soul energy. Not just from within him, but from the plants and animals who also inhabited this dreamlike place. Maybe he wasn't so alone after all.
