A Special Day
Our story starts on a lovely spring day in Pika Park. A young terracoon was waiting patiently at the gates. A large five-day festival was about to start it's first day. It wasn't a music festival, nor was it an art festival. No, this was special. This was a travelling zoo festival. The locals had spent the last ten weeks preparing the park for all the different animals that would be coming. Vendors were also setting up their food carts as well as games and gift shops. Kurson, our young friend, had been waiting for at least an hour. She was so excited! And at last the time had come for the gates to open for business. The crowd heavily pushed through the doors as they opened. Or maybe that was just Kurson's heart pounding...for there were very few people behind her. It was still early and they weren't really expecting a lot of people until around lunchtime. But this little lass had a mission. She had known from the start what her plan for the day was and nothing was going to stop her. This was it! Kurson walked with a purpose--straight to the taco cart. "Two tacos, an order of tamales and a drink please!" she beamed at the vendor. And with food in hand, she continued on her way. What? You thought that was her mission? No that's just silly when there are taco places everywhere! Getting back to our story...Kurson ambled on around the festival. She'd look once in a while at some of the animals but none really stopped her. That is, until she arrived at her final destination. The giraffe exhibit.
What was it about the giraffe that was so special? I mean why did Kurson like these long-necked herbivores? Well, for one, giraffes spots are like human fingerprints or snowflakes...no two patterns are alike! And as they age, their spots get darker. That not enough? Giraffes spend most of their life standing up. They even sleep (for only 10 minutes to 2 hours a day) and give birth standing up. Furthermore, baby giraffes can stand up as soon as 30 minutes after being born! Now, if you are into the weirder facts, then this one is for you! A giraffe's tongue and upper lip are prehensile. That means that together, it provides the giraffe with a hand-like limb to grab things. They are also ruminants, which means that they have more than one stomach. In this case, they have four that help with digestion. All these facts and more make this Kurson's favorite animal.
Kurson spent all day near the giraffe enclosure. She had fun drawing and taking photos of all of them. The pen keeper even let her feed the giraffes! At the end of the day, she was exhausted but completely happy. And better yet, she was excited because she knew what she was doing tomorrow as well!
