Have you ever wondered what it would be like if there were no constraints to your actions? No consequences, no strings attached, nobody that you are held accountable to. If nothing in this world really mattered, how liberated would you feel? Moral and ethical laws bind us to a certain set of behaviors that society expects from us… but what if you could bypass them, transcend time and space itself and undo any damage you might have caused? The ability to ‘reset’ so to speak - to bring everything back to point zero and start all over again.
Perhaps you would initially use this power for the good of mankind… flawlessly achieve victory in every potential way by cheating the system in this manner. Others would herald and praise you for your profound knowledge - something that you have only gained through countless tries and trying again. If everyone had this ability, we would all be as clever as you, would we not?
But a world like that gets static after a while. Stale. Unmoving. It is too easy now. There are no more rewards to your successes when nothing is difficult to achieve. It’s the trial that brings weight to a triumph, you know. Why do we feel accomplished? It is equal to the effort we have invested. If everything was merely handed to you, would that make you feel as though you have truly earned it?
When you know everything, when you reach what we term ‘perfection,’ you stop growing as an individual. Where are you headed now? Do you even know anymore? It would become easy to devolve into a state of boredom… of fatigue of this world. Once vast and open and exciting, it now all seems so little in comparison. You’ve tested every boundary, every moment of existence that your space has to offer. If only there was something more…
What about the other side of the spectrum? What if you decided that this life of faultlessness was too monotone for you tastes? Chaos would be a delightful alternative, don’t you think? A splash of color… a stain in your perfect record… a bit of fun and excitement into the mix.
The first time you see the life fade from their eyes is always the hardest. When you feel that you are the reason their spark has been extinguished from existence in this mortal plane. Maybe you’re not feeling so sure whether or not you actually want to do this. But you can always undo, can’t you? There are no consequences here. It doesn’t matter, you tell yourself. You’re just curious, you tell yourself. But is that really true? Isn’t it exciting somehow, to break past these boundaries?
You get a thrill like you’ve never felt before. It’s a new feeling that your life lacked previously, and it brings new elements into the mixture. So you test it again. And again. Because why not? It’s fun, isn’t it? There are so many more options to explore on this side of the equation. So many new possibilities and potentials and threads into this timeline you’re creating.
After a while… this, too, loses its intrigue. Everything does, of course, it’s just the amount of time it takes for you to reach that point. But that’s okay, right? It’s not like anything here actually matters anymore.
Except that is the lie you are telling yourself. All this time, you thought you were free from consequences. But there is one, deep down. It’s a part of you now. It’s rooted into the core of your heart and mind, from which all your actions are determined. You have distanced yourself so much from this world, that it no longer feels real to you. You are lost. You thought you were free, but you have chained yourself more than you could ever know. It’s because our actions have consequences that makes them important. It makes you important. It makes you who you are. It defines you. You have lost what makes yourself your own entity, and that is a sad thing indeed.
Our time in this world might be short, but that is why it matters. Everything you do here matters. Everything you are, you imprint into this world with each and every action you take. Perhaps you cannot see where your ripples are headed, or what influence you leave in your wake, but know this - as true as the world continues on, you are a part of it. Perhaps a small part, but a part nonetheless. You can do great things. Or you can choose not to. It’s all up to you now, what you do with your life and who you become. So make the most of it, and do not lose your connection to this reality - have the courage to define your existence, even if you make mistakes. Even if you are not perfect. Even if you do have consequences.
