Class lets out early, and you and Acionna decide to go back to her parents' house to work on an assignment.
You have been friends with Acionna for a few months now. The semester is ending, and the January wind is bitter. Knopki offers to take the two of you back to their Mother's house.
You are nervous to meet her. You know of her, that she is a brilliant psychiatrist in the city, but you have never met her. Hell, you're still very nervous around Knopki, and you've known him for quite some time. You guys have grown closer through the semester, but he still makes your heart flutter when he looks your way. You still feel like something is off about the siblings, but you can't put your finger on it. The creeping thought of the first day you met them comes into your mind now and again, but they are both polite, studious people, and you really have no room to judge them for... whatever it is you're judging them about.
You sit in the passenger seat of Knopki's car. Acionna is chattering away about your Chemistry professor's ugly shoes, but you are focused on looking out the window. All the shades of brown, gray, and white surrounds the car, going past in blurs as you travel down the road.
"Hey," Knopki murmurs quietly to you under his breath. "You okay?"
"Fine," you whisper. You nod as if telling yourself that you feel fine.
"My mother is nice, I promise." Knopki's eyes never leave the road, and he gives your knee a comforting pat. It makes your heart leap into your throat.
The drive goes by without a hitch, and soon you find yourself crawling up a long, winding driveway towards a towering castle of a house. It looks like something out of a Children's storybook about a haunted mansion.
As Knopki pulls the car into park, Acionna flings herself out the car door, excited to be home.
Knopki glances at you as he unbuckles his seatbelt. "I should tell you a little bit about our family before we go in."
You glance out the window. Acionna is already halfway up the staircase towards the rickety pillars of the front porch. You turn back to Knopki, swallowing hard.
You nod, trying to stay cool. "Sure. What do I need to know?"
Knopki kills the engine and looks over at me. "Acionna and I are not actually related. We are adopted."
You fight to pull back from the shock of what he is saying. "Oh."
"It's not too sad or anything," he offers a smile. "We grew up together and everything. My mother is rather young comparatively. She's nice. She's a bit crass. But she is nice."
You nod. You don't know what to say.
"Alright," he nods back. He opens his car door. "Let's go then."
When you enter the house, you are greeted by a cold, dry draft. It's still warmer than outside, so you are thankful.
A woman sweeps into the room just as you are eyeing the place. It's huge and dark, the lights are all dim white. It smells like cinnamon and something tangy you can't quite put your finger on.
"Hello," she says. "I am Dr. Locket."
You can't help but to gawk at her. She is a very beautiful woman. You can't tell if she's twenty years old or fifty years old. You just know that she is beautiful.
You bow your head. "Nice to meet you."
"Knopki," she nods to him. "You've got quite a pretty one here."
He rubs the back of his neck and looks away from you. "Mother."
Acionna swings into the room with a bottle of water in her hand. She tosses it at you, and you clumsily catch it.
"Drinks on me," she gives you a thumbs up. She doesn't have her own bottle, though. Come to think of it, you've never seen Acionna nor Knopki drink anything. Or eat anything. They are such a strange family.
You hear your name and turn away from your thoughts back to Dr. Locket. She motions towards the velvety brown sofa in the looming living room. "Have a seat. We can get to know each other."
You follow her instructions because you don't quite know what else to do. It is all so strange. The house, Acionna, Dr. Locket... Knopki...
As you sit down, you realize what the tangy smell reminds you of. It smells like...
