Life Excerpt
He was grumpy. He knew he was. They'd known each other long enough for Markum to instantly know what kind of mood his partner was in. And Fenris was grumpy. He got closer to the elf and put an arm around his shoulder as they walked.
-"Why so glum, chum?" Fenris shook his head and then he looked at Markum.
-"You know why."
-"I know. But how could I say no?"
-"Shouldn't have been too hard. You just said it." Markum's face beamed with a big smile. He loved it when his lover made jokes like that. They were few and far between, but that just made those moments that much sweeter.
-"Aw, you're so funny, hun. But seriously, Varric's an old friend and he asked for my help." Fenris stopped walking and looked at him, searching his face for an indication of something. Of what Markum honestly didn't know.
-"You sure it has nothing to do with getting back into the fray again? To be a hero once more. Only this time closer to home." Markum looked confused. Fenris sighed and shook his head. "The place of your birth."
-"Oh, well that doesn't really mean much to me. I mean Kirkwall is my home now and more so than Ferelden ever was. And you know full well that I'm done with the whole hero thing."
-"I thought I did." No one else would have picked up on it, it was so subtle. But Markum knew this elven man intimately enough to notice the hurt and uncertainty in Fenris' voice. Two steps forward and he put his arms around him. A few moments passed before Fenris hugged him back. Public shows of affection like this was not really his thing.
-"You do know me, my love."
-"Then don't go. Please. I..."
-"What?" Markum's voice was soft and caring. Fenris looked up and met his gaze.
-"I don't want to lose you..." His voice trailed off at the end but Markum had heard what he said.
-"I promise you that once it's all over we'll go and live in a hole somewhere, away from all the world and it's prying eyes." Fenris smiled.
-"That would be nice. But it almost sounded like a goodbye." Markum pushed his fingers through the hair at the back of Fenris' head and leaned his own head forward so that their foreheads and nose tips were touching.
-"It wasn't. It was a genuine promise."
-"And where would this hole be?"
-"Well, I was thinking somewhere in the land of my birth." Fenris looked shocked and a bit confused.
-"I thought Kirkwall was your home" Markum smiled.
-"It is. But, I've heard whispers that marital laws might be changing over there in the near future."
-"You mean...?"
-"Yes, silly. I want us to be official." Fenris smiled, and kissed his husband-to-be.
