The Denbora were never really above damning their own kind, even if it was based more out of fear and tradition then real malevolence. Still, even if the intention weren't cruel, it's something Merikh has not forgotten. His bitterness towards them is probably fairly justified.
That monster, the one they worship as a god, twisted him, scarred him, and the humans who found him after did not better. He knows his parents didn't fare any better, either, all those ages ago.
This, however, hides his true fear. It's not that he hates the Denbora for what they did to him, truly.
He fears what their god will do to them if he's found.
