Deep beneath the islands of Japan there dwells a massive, black catfish: Namazu. A prideful sort, Namazu took great insult to how little respect he and his kind received from humanity. Other fish were admired and celebrated for their usefulness in cooking, but the catfish was regarded as a lazy, tasteless creature. Namazu took to thrashing about in the mud, causing devastating earthquakes in the lands above. Eventually, the god Kashima had had enough of this: with an enormous boulder, he pinned the temperamental catfish down, dedicating himself to stopping Namazu from causing further harm. But even gods have moments of laziness, and when Kashima shirks his duties, Namazu's flailing continues and the world shakes around him.
