As in all the years past, my family gathered now. Every luxurious woman, every man with a long name, and all of the beautiful presumptive youngsters came together to welcome the Hanukkiya's light in our house. And I am here, too. Walking around with a fixed, tiny smile on my face. I have a beautiful word, a friendly gesture, for every guest in the crowd. An excellent host, a superb daughter, an international dress parlour's prospective proprietor. In a year, or maybe two, most imagine an exemplary, renowned husband to be my side. Any girl's dream come true.
Having completed my duties, I walk away from the family circle my family has made. The French window in our family room is inviting, with tiny falling snowflakes glittering behind the dark glass. I open the door to the balcony, and the cold December air beats against my face pleasureably as I step outside into the night.
I glance at him from the balcony as he spreads his hands and removes his hat. He smiles like he did on the first day, when I realized that I had fallen in love with him. The smile of a bohemian musician. A good for nothing gypsy's neglectful but loving smile.
The twinkling of the silver decorations and the laughter of my family inside my home may no longer rival the shimmer of his yellow eyes. As soon as I lean out to get a better look at him, my hip gets pushed against the wrought-iron bar. This is just as real, and all I want is to work my magic and fly down to him like the free-spirited bird I am inside.
I do not want anything else. For now, I am a graceful magpie.
