Torpedo the Tripedal Crow

The night sky was alight with laser fire and explosions. Moving shadows of soldiers withered where they fell, calling out, crying out, cut short by those fighting forward amidst the scorched and scared front. The remaining buildings offering little cover as they continued to crumble under the unrelenting missiles raining down ahead of the advancing army.

"They've taken the bunker!" The Commander shouted over the noise. "Concentrate fire on th---" A blast to the chest cut short the orders.

"FALL BACK!" The Major ordered.

"To where? We're getting hammered." Novawake howled staying close to the Major's six. They ducked behind the smoldering remains of a tank.

"I'm hit! - I'm hit" Someone behind cried out.

"We lost air support!" Captain shouted whipping a grenade towards the bunkers entrance, nailing those going in.

"What one?" The Major demanded concentrating his fire on the advancing frontline.

"All of them!" The Corporal replied. "The entire Air force is gone!"

"We can't stay here! We'll be slaughtered!" Novawake shouted patching a wound in the Major's side."Retreat to the sea wall!" The Major ordered. "Captain! Lead the way! I'll cover!"

"Yes sir!" The Captain moved using dead bodies and rubble as cover.

"Sir?" Novawake demanded packing the medical kit away and picking up her weapon.

"Go Sergeant. I'll supply the cover fire." The Major's voice softer.

Novawake swallowed nodding. "Give them hell sir." She backed up from him and followed those left of her unit alive.

A harsh curse came from in front as the Corporal tumbled and summersaulted before laying still. Firing at those coming from behind the bunker, Novawake jumped over the man not looking at the corpse. The sea wall being the only objective. That and staying alive.
"Captain!" Novawake called but it was too late as he stumbled forward landing on the ground.
Crawling over his his side. "Hold on sir!" She hissed putting her hand over his shoulder.

"Nahh, not gonna make it." The enemy growled shooting the bleeding man.

Stunned, Novawake blinked as gore splattered her face. Hands still on his shoulder.

"He's the last one." A solider stated.

"We taking prisoners?" Another asked reloading his rifle.

Novawake looked up at the three men now surrounding her. Blood soaked hands slowly lifting and raising in surrender.

"Yeah. This ones a medic, could be useful." The leader of the three frowned.

Five years. Five long hard years later. Nothing could ever be the same again. Ever. Not for Novawake.

The cold gray waves crashed against the rocky shoreline. Somewhere across the barrier the sky met the sea and yet, it was all the same gray. Out there, on the water. That was her next objective.

Novawake turned, her feet crunching the gravel as she made her way to the docks.

Solider to Pirate. Wasn't that hard of a career change.
