The story I'm about to tell you is not written in any book nor taught in schools to little children. This story is one that I lived, and it may be a bit happy, it may be a bit sad. It's sometimes even silly and lighthearted, and maybe a bit melancholy.
Either way, this is my story to tell and I wish to share to you. This is a story of a small and insignificant being with no greater purpose, no higher motive or goals or even aims to be more than he wished to be. No, this is a story of a very very dim star whose presence could not even be seen from beyond the horizons and the pitch dark of the night sky. A star, for all intents and purposes met a bright hope and dreamed of a brighter future, only for it to be destroyed in an instance.
This is my story to tell and I hope you will listen closely.
Once a long time ago and light years from your planet earth, we stars lived in peace. Though we appear on your human metal objects and pictures as 'giant globes of dust and gas', our hearts and souls were sentient, and we saw only our forms when our eyes laid on each other. We cared not for gender since it was meaningless to celestial bodies like us, for we are not born but created from the dead light from old stars.
We came in many shapes and sizes, and most of us took the forms of the odd creatures that lived on your green planet. Some took the shape of the large fish that swim the great waters, some the small flying things that littered the skies with their wild calls and wings. Others took the forms of the woodland creatures, while some even adopted the forms of your most fearsome beasts.
I took for myself the form of the trickster, the one that calls in loneliness and steals those odd fat, feathered and noisy beings raised by you humans. The one whose large ears flick back and forth and whose cheeky grin and mischievous eyes glint with cunning. A fox, I believe you humans called it? Irrelevant, for names meant nothing to us. You humans may have a need to name every child and beast, but our lives were too vast to even care for such a trivial thing.
But I lose track of my story. Ages of wandering your earth and years of loneliness has caused me to adopt the odd habit of prattling.
Each of us had our own light, and many glowed so brightly that they could be seen from many worlds. They showed them off, their hearts beating so brightly that they were a beacon to us all, including to you mortals. They were revered, and many would stare in awe at their beauty and might.
Me? Such a weak light like I did not warrant one's attention, and I grew to be alone in the field of darkness. And loneliness can breed such chaos, so like my form I began to play tricks on the other stars. I would steal their light and hide it among the moons and endless debris of rocks, and those poor stars would shout and screech at me in an angry cacophony of voices at my pranks. They'd chase after me, teeth bared or claws ready to deter me from my antics.
Yet despite my carefree fun, I was quite aware that my light was still quite minuscule in brightness. The others sneered at me, showing off their bright lights haughtily as they guarded against my mischief. It was all entertainment to me...
but I was still alone.
Thank you, Vanity, for letting me adopt Nox! ♥️
