Mimi (working name) is a girl who is a vintage and thrifting fashion blogger.
She recently was forced to move back home to Ohio due to her inability to land her dream job with Teen Vogue (working name. Will replace with a fictional alternative), and the last thing she feels like is #blackgirlmagic.
She's dealing with the existential crisis and depression that has befallen on many millennials in a similar position as she tries to figure out what to do with her life in a world where it feels impossible to live the "American Dream".
One afternoon, she encounters a cryptid in the woods (I'm thinking either Mothman, Loveland Frog Man, or Dogman) while taking outfit photos for her blog and begins to fall in love with him.
Inspo: Fashion bloggers, The Bold Type, and Shape of Water
Mom and dad are actually really supportive and understanding and do not mind helping support her as she gets back on her feet to figure out her next steps.
Our heroine regards herself as a total failure with her love life as well. She has accepted her fate that she will end up as a spinster.
She abandons her blog upon returning home and doesn't start blogging again until she finally can bring herself to admit that things didn't go as planned for her in NYC. She also finds inspiration from her past self and manages to rekindle her creativity and love for thrifting and fashion.
How do I want the story to progress once she meets her crytpid hottie??
Proceed like Shape of Water where she needs to rescue him and he whisks her away into happily ever after?
Or do they just proceed like normal as if she were dating a human person? LOL
Need a chapter on when she meets Hawthorne, her fox pet.
Need a chapter about trying out dating apps and being horrified thus leading to spinster-ness.
Need a chapter on her finally opening up on her blog.
Need a chapter on when she finally meets cryptid hottie.
Cryptid is shy. But Mimi sets up and tries to use trail cams to spot this creature. He is fearful of these things, but his friends explain to him what they are, and warns him to keep away from them lest the humans learn of their existence. He also leaves her gifts in the woods. He makes her a flower crown OMG ;u;

After failing to land her dream job with Mojo Magazine, she was on a flight back home to podunk Ohio and the last thing she feels like is #blackgirlmagic. She worked her tail off at her internship with WHOA Publishers, and she felt good about her interview with Mojo Magazine. But in the end, they passed her over and it kept gnawing at her as to why they didn't choose her.
Was it because I wore my hair naturally? Was it because I didn't work hard enough? Did I come off as bragging when talking about my accomplishments? Was it my tone?
This soundtrack of thoughts played on repeat in her mind as she nitpicked every little detail of her interview from the moment she hopped out of her Hitch to when she finished her interview and headed into the bathroom to do a sweat check.
Maybe one of the interviewers saw me go into the bathroom and thought, "Gross! She's gotta use it!" and deemed me unsuitable for the job because…bodily functions…?
Mimi's mind couldn't stop weaving crazy conspiracies as the landscape changed below her. A picture of her latest outfit of the day photo shoot immediately reminded her of the upcoming blog post she was putting together. While her dreams were falling apart in Manhattan she had put up a facade that everything was going great on her popular fashion blog, Punny Blog Name Here.
Her latest post was supposed to be live two weeks ago, but the stress of what was really going on had gotten to her. Mimi didn't want to pretend that everything was peachy-keen anymore, but she also didn't want to admit to her fans and friends that she was a complete failure.
They helped her bring her bags into the house and her heart skipped a beat as she walked into her childhood bedroom. It was as if she had never left - [describe the posters on the wall, knick knacks, bookshelves etc].
She basically flops face-first into the bed and doesn't wake up until the next morning, noticing the smell of pancakes and the fact that her blanket was tucked in around her. Her mom tells her she tried waking her for dinner last night, but saw she was dead ass asleep and tucked her in.
Her mom then gently tries to engage her into talking about NYC - not about her job interviews and such but instead focusing on what she liked about her adventures out there.
It's only been two weeks since Mimi arrived back home.
Home.
The truth finally hit her. Home was not New York City.
Home was here, back in Ohio, back in her old room, back in her parent's house.
The shame she was hiding from consumed her.
She thought of her blog, her followers, her friends...
What would they think if they knew the truth?
She imagined their judgement and criticism when they finally discovered her shameful truth - the truth that she had failed.
Guilt came knocking on the door of her mind while shame made itself comfortable.
Why has she been moping around and sleeping so much?
Why was she spending all her time losing herself in books and binge-watching shows on Hoo-Hoo?
She should be working. She should be putting out her resume, posting on her blog, engaging with her fans. If she really cared about her dreams and goals then why wasn't she getting stuff done?
She now has the privilege of not having to pay rent, or bills, and now has her basic needs covered for free in a large cozy home. She should be taking advantage of this opportunity, and every day she wastes watching another episode of Real Housewives of Portlandia is another day wasted to getting closer to her dreams.
But all of her passion and energy was gone from her body. Even the idea of getting dressed or showering exhausted her let alone boogling for new jobs or going out into the woods to take outfit photos.
Mimi was about to burrow herself under her covers when there was a gentle knock on the door.
"Hey sweetie, it's mom. May I come in?"
Mimi shot straight up, and quickly worked to fix her face of any signs that she had been crying, "Uh yeah! Come in!" She said trying to sound as cheery as possible.
Enter mom and Mimi finally opens up about how shitty she feels about EVERYTHING.
Mom tells her that if they were her real friends and fans they wouldn't judge her. Failure isn't a bad thing.
Insert quote about failure yada yada yada.
Mom then tells relatable story about her own life, how difficult things are for black women and how they have to work twice as hard as anyone else, and how she herself lost people she considered friends and family when they learned that she was seriously dating her father.
How she meets Hawthorne:
She's sitting at her desk trying to will herself to do SOMETHING when she looks out the window and spots some drama. A flash of fur dashes up the Oak tree and Mrs. Fulton's dog, Dorcus the Third, is loose again and barking at whatever disappeared up in the tree.
Mimi tells the dog, "Go home, Dorcus the Third. The fox [Hawthorne] hops down into her arms after some coaxing and she puts them on the ground. The fox ends up coming back to her house each day and she ends up adopting him.
It's the weekend.
Hawthorne has been motivating her to get out of bed basically and she's been toying with the idea to snap some outfit photos. She's been itching to get creative again, but because her blog was her main creative outlet and she's STILL avoiding it she just felt like she couldn't do it. But then she realizes she doesn't HAVE to post anything.
She can just take pictures - go back to her "roots" so-to-speak. Putting together outfits, doing fun photo shoots in the woods were something she really enjoyed doing. Blogging was the icing on the cake because she was then able to write and share about her life, her thoughts, and find community.
Her parents warn her about rumors in town about something strange going on out in the woods so she needs to be careful. They don't really want her going out there, but she tells them how she knows the woods like the back of her hands and she's got Hawthorne to help keep an eye out for her. They grudgingly oblige.
She's got Hawthorne and some lunch.
There's a bridge in the woods that's fabled to be haunted by The Goatman. She doesn't believe in urban legends and likes to cross into that portion of forest for photos.
Idea path if earth-based cryptid (goatman):
She notices some hoof tracks but thinks nothing of it. They probably belong to an animal.
After lunch, she heads back home to take a closer look at the photos she took and notices something odd in the background. A flash of fur, or a set of horns.
She thinks maybe she's just reading more into what is actually there.
If earth-based cryptids:
Local news has been reporting about sheep maulings in the area. Some think it's satanic-inspired, others are saying that it's wolves or coyotes.
It's actually a bad guy cryptid. :O
Hunters start laying out traps to catch the creature responsible for these killings.
Mimi finds our shy cryptid stuck in a trap, or has a bullet wound, or is hurt somehow, nurses his wounds, and he gets tf out of there like a bat out of hell.
He leaves and she's just like wtf was that and what just happened omg was that thing real???
But the next time she's in the woods for photos, she finds a handmade flower crown!!! On the bridge!!! And it's from the guy!!!!
And then later, she starts to leave food for him on the bridge.
We get things from our cryptid's perspective.
Our cryptid goatman is:
Shy
Likes to play Malls and Manwith his friends every Monday night.
He is a direct descendant of the god, Pan.
He and his family protect one of the local forests that a super cute fashion blogger just so happens to use for her outfit photo shoots.
