I wish I were an Oscar Mayer wiener,
that is what I truly wish to be;
Cuz if I were an Oscar Mayer Weiner,
Everyone would be in love with me.

Life low to the ground is not as easy as it looks. Imagine being on such short legs that every time it rains your belly gets wet. It does have a good side, though: your cuteness factor is through the roof! As a breed of German origin, WWI was very hard on Dachshunds. They were stoned in the streets in America. There were cartoons made of them being killed by other dogs or people during that time. The breed has come a long way since then. The Dachshund, sometimes called the “wiener dog” or “hot dog”, is usually listed among the top 10 breeds in America. How could you not love them? Once you see their beautiful eyes you just melt. Once a Dachshund owner, always a Dachshund owner.

The Dachshund comes in many colors and coats as well as two different sizes. There is red, cream, black and tan, blue and tan, chocolate and tan, and Isabella and tan. All the tan points come in cream points as well. There are many patterns: dapple (merle), double dapple (double merle), dapple piebald (merle with white), piebald (solid color with white), brindle (tabby), and wild boar (banded). Double dapple is frowned upon because, like the “white” gene in other breeds, it can cause blindness and deafness. Make no mistake—the white gene that makes double dapples is not worth the price of the defects that come with it. Dapple piebald is frowned on as well due to the fact it is hard to tell if you are a double dapple or a dapple piebald.

There are three coat types: wirehair, short hair, and long hair. Some say that with each coat comes a different personality. I think this may have been true in the earlier years, but with the mixing of coat types, most Dachshunds have the same temperament today.

The Dachshund is typically a curious, friendly, and spunky breed. The proper way to pronounce dachshund is DAKS hund— never 'dash-hound". They come in two different sizes. The miniature is 11 lbs and under. The standard Dachshund is between 16-32 lbs. If your Dachshund falls between those weights they are generally called a ‘tweenie'.

The Dachshund is a versatile companion. With his variety of sizes, colors, and coat types, there's a Dachshund to suit almost anyone!

To be named Oscar Mayer means I have a lot to live up to. I wear this outfit to show how proud I am to be a wiener dog. The life of a dachshund is a very busy one. First, I get up and let everyone know that I'm awake and ready for the day. Then it is my job to dig the minimum number of holes per day in my yard. Usually, that means at least 2 holes. The more craters the better. Then it's off to smell all around the yard to be sure no strange creatures have been there. Then back to the couch to sit next to my Mom and take a nap….and, of course, belly scratches.
