Out of the mid-wood’s twilight
Into the meadow’s dawn,
Ivory limbed and brown-eyed,
Flashes my Faun!

I’m not quite sure when it started or why but for years now I’ve had an interest in LGBTQ+ rights and equal rights by proxy. This led me to finding out more about how especially homosexuals were treated in the past. And Oscar Wilde’s fate is one of those that have stuck with me ever since I first learned of it many years ago. He is not the only one by far, but like I said his is one that has stayed with me. It breaks my heart to know how people were treated just because of their sexuality. How many brilliant minds have we lost in the past because of this ridiculous way of thinking?
I know that the LGBTQ+ community is still facing adversity to this day but it’s at least comforting to know that we’ve moved on from the way things were back then or even further back in history. There are many examples of famous people that have been punished when their only crime has been to love. How can we punish anyone for loving someone else? I will never understand that.
Granted, I am an atheist but one thing I will never accept is when people try to hide their homophobia behind their faith. I might not be very well-read when it comes to the bible but as far as I know Jesus supposedly talked about love and forgiveness. Turning the other cheek. Yet, so-called true believers find it appropriate to claim that their belief gives them the right to discriminate against others because of who they love?

He skips through the copses singing,
And his shadow dances along
And I know not which I should follow,
Shadow or song!

When I read anything by Wilde I’m struck by how beautifully he paints the world around the characters in his stories. And how interesting the characters themselves are. Granted I have not read many works by authors from that time so I don’t really know if it was the norm to write that way. But I would like to think that the same way authors of today have their particular way of writing so too did authors of the past.
I can only go by the pictures of him that I’ve seen, what I’ve read about him and the works by him that I have at my disposal but the picture that I’ve painted of Oscar Wilde in my mind is that of a vibrant man that loved life to the fullest. He loved beauty. In many ways he seems to me to have been somewhat similar to his own Dorian. Maybe not entirely but there are some parts of that personality that seem to ring true in how I picture Mr Wilde to have been as a person.

O hunter, snare me his shadow!
O nightingale, catch me his strain!
Else moonstruck with music and madness
I track him in vain!
