v. change (organic matter) into a stony concretion by encrusting or replacing its original substance with a calcareous, siliceous, or other mineral deposit.
Once a living being, he lived in a stone city during ancient times. He held a position of power, more powerful than the tribe leader, even, as he had been the high priest. He was dutiful, serious, and though none would admit it, rather paranoid about the tribe's secrets.
On one fateful day, while studying charts and calendars, he noticed something. This was their forewarning of an upcoming "apocalypse" of their civilization.
Most of the tribe fled on the advice of the priest, for he knew that they could not hope to survive the event. Not naturally, anyhow. He only had one thought fixed in his mind: He must protect the city's secrets.
With that, he cast an enchantment upon himself, so that he would survive and protect their precious information forevermore.
However, when the time came, nearly all of the city came crashing down onto his head. Buried under a hundred feet of rubble, he blacked out.
Tens of thousands of years later, he awoke, eventually dug himself, and so it was that his body had been turned to stone. Whether the work of the enchantment or just the passing of time, it was uncertain. But this did not concern him, for when he emerged, he did not emerge as the priest of ages long past.
No, he emerged as an aggressive, violent protector of the city's ruins. None of his previous life's memories assail him, for he remembers nothing, and his only duty is to protect the city from those who dare venture into its depths.
. . .
But on cold, misty mornings, free of the presence of unfortunate travellers, he lies quietly upon his perch. Watching, waiting, and always on his own. He does not remember anything, and never does a thought pass through his mind, as his transformation all but destroyed his consciousness. Now, he acts upon his newfound instinct alone.
Despite his incapacity to comprehend complex thought, it is not difficult to sense, or perhaps only imagine, a forlorn, sad air to his existence.
