The dragons are part of us.
My grandmother always told me that. She had been the first one to ever tame a dragon, and it was then that we learned how special they were. We never knew that they could fly... Only when a Prism sat atop the back of a dragon did it sprout wings and soar through the air. We had heard of such legends from long ago, but never paid them any heed. The dragons burned our houses and devoured our livestock, why would we want anything to do with them?
Sometimes I think about those dark times, where dragons did not own our land beside us. It sounds terrifying, to me. Now, simply glancing at the sky will give you a view of at least 10 of them, out for casual rides with their masters, or preparing to hunt.
The latter was what I was interested in.
Despite connecting with the dragons, there were still always a select few of the creatures who were not interested in human companionship. Thus, we still suffered losses by them. But with our new comrades, we refused to simply flee at the sight of the delinquents. Our greatest warriors rode their mounts into battle, slaying the ones who would dare betray our new covenant.
A rather infamous dragon visited our kingdom one day, when I was only fourteen years. Word had been spreading across the land about him - he was black as night, with markings and eyes of icy blue. He led a small band of destructive beasts, and they brought grief wherever they set their claws.
When his group appeared at the outskirts of the city, everyone rushed into their homes. The warriors hurried to the castle to fetch their well-kept and pampered dragons, but I headed directly for the gates, my spear clutched tightly in my hand.
There were about five dragons in the herd, and there was quite a bit of space between them. I approached the first, and it simply glanced at me. Obviously, it had learned that humans were nothing to fear.
It was a fatal mistake that cost the first five their lives. Plunging my spear into the necks of the monsters, their reigns of terror finally ended. Not one reacted to me in any way other than a bored stare. It was almost... disappointing.
But then, I saw him. The Black Nightmare. His eyes shone straight at me, bright ice like the splattered marks on his back. He saw the blood on my spear, and immediately charged.
I had fought many dragons before, and killed several, but he was unlike anything I had ever seen. I had never fought any males - they were the most dangerous and as such, were never kept within the kingdom. This one was certainly a male. He was larger than the others, and charged with a terrifying ferocity. His roars echoed across the plain that I had stained with the blood of his comrades.
He took a strong leap at me, his claws tearing at the grass. I jumped slightly and vaulted over him, using his large forehead as a platform. I landed on his back and quickly spun myself around.
Wings of light burst from his shoulder blades on either side of me. He jolted backwards in surprise, then began to run in circles, trying to catch a glimpse of the flash that had startled him.
I held on tightly to his horns, which curved from the back of his head down around his neck. I yelled all sorts of threats and even dared him to take flight.
He stopped quickly and met my eyes. For a moment, everything was still. He was very aware of my presence on his back, but he almost... didn't seem to mind. His eyes softened a bit, and he suddenly took off running.
My heart leapt. I had ridden plenty of dragons, tamed and wild, but there was something so different about this one. He was just so much larger, stronger, and,,,
Can you take me as your own?
I heard the challenge ring in my mind as his feet left the ground, his new wings flapping powerfully to propel him. The hills below became farther and farther away, until they were nothing but a blurry backdrop. I lifted my head and saw only the sky, accented by clouds. The wind tossed my silver hair into my face, but I dared not let go of the dragon's horns to clear it.
Our flight was silent and steady. He did not roll himself, or attempt to shake me off in any way. We just flew. I closed my eyes, thanking him for this gift, for his strength.
I've killed no one.
I kept my eyes closed, listening intently to his heart. My magic coursed through me into him, and our spirits connected.
I have never held trust for another.
Do you trust me?
If your weapon remains far from my neck... I shall.

It took a bit of convincing for the panicked townspeople to allow my dragon into the city. When I presented the heads of the other five, they seemed a bit more agreeable.
My dragon walked calmly beside me, taking in the sights of the city, his new home. We found the royal stable, and a spare paddock. He walked into it without a second thought and sat down, watching me.
"You'll stay here." I smiled, shutting the door behind him. "Behave, or they'll make me kill you, okay?"
He showed his teeth to me, his way of smiling, I supposed.
"I'll get you a nameplate soon, I promise. ...Nikandros." The name had come to me as we were flying. I could not be sure if he had told me, or if it had been given to us. Either way, it was his name, and he had immediately responded to it. He seemed to like it.
When I had finished tidying the stable, I strode out of it, grabbing my spear, its blade now clean and shining. I glanced at Nikandros. He was looking back at me, in an almost proud manner.
If you remain trustworthy, I will help you destroy those who would hurt you. And I shall remain yours, for as long as our trust lasts.
