Around and around the carousel spun, running on it’s endless loop. The only break in the cycles was the starts and stops to load and unload it’s riders. Little children would shout gleefully from the backs of their mounts, while parents would fret about the children holding on.

Rodeo loved these moments. He loved seeing the children enjoying themselves, and he loved it when the children talked to him like he was a real horse and told him stories. What he didn’t love was being restricted to his loop. As he stared at the scenery day in and day out, he dreamed of being able run free of the track and gallop through the fields that surrounded them.

He wondered how it would feel to have the grass underneath his hooves and smell the fresh air around him. He dreamed of being owned by a cowboy, and learning how to herd cattle. To hear the mooing as he chased down strays and brought them back to the group. To work as a team with other horses and cowboys to get the job done.

Perhaps they could even chase after some bandits like the good guys in the stories the children sometimes told him. He could just imagine the feeling of dodging bullets and running on pure adrenaline. How fun would it be?

If only he were real. If only he could just escape his restraints for a short period of time, just to know how it feels. But for now, his only solace was in the moments when the carousel happened to stop with a view of the fields beyond.
