Sigmund sighed and wearily rubbed his eyes. He was one of the premiere code breakers on Subeta but this particular code had eluded him for weeks. He was working day and night, under intense pressure from the SAI to finally crack it. They acted like it was such a simple task, suggesting maybe he wasn't quite as good as he thought if he were going to take this long. They didn't realize how convoluted it was. He had only been given small scraps containing the code, he had no large body of text to work from. It also seemed to reference several different lands and languages from all over the world.

He sighed again and looked at his empty coffee cup. When had he finished drinking it? An hour ago? Two? It was too much. He lay his head down on the table, just to close his eyes for a moment.

He woke suddenly from a deep sleep. He didn't know how long he had slept but he didn't care. He knocked the coffee cup over in his haste to reach a pen, he’d figured out how to crack the code.

For the next hour he worked. Finally, he managed to translate a scrap.

All it said was, “they're watching you.”

Scratching his nose with his pen, he looked around. What an odd piece of code. He grabbed a second scrap to work on. It was again a slow process translating, but eventually he read, “Sigmund, please. Stop now.”

He dropped his pen. This had gotten bizarre. He looked around once again but saw no one.

He spent the remainder of the night translating, but each message became more ominous as they implored him not to continue. But he had to know what each message said.

He should have stopped. He should never have read the shocking message at the end. And perhaps, he shouldn't have spilled coffee all over his work as the SAI arrived, rendering it illegible. But he had, and as he stared into the stern faces of his employers, he realized just how unpleasant the consequences of his actions would likely be.
