Description

To eighteen-year-old Jennifer Hallow, joining a fighter squadron was a dream come true. After her family was killed in a raid by the bloodthirsty sky pirates, she vowed to join the bomber squadrons to wipe them out and protect her beloved home. The happiest moment of her life was when she first laid eyes on the gleaming new bomber Sphinx, presented to her by her beaming squadron members - finally, a plane of her very own.

But from that moment onwards, everything seems to go wrong. Jennifer's teammate, the elegantly beautiful, acid-tongued Arcadia Harkness, loathes her and is attempting to slowly poison the rest of her squadron members against her. A bill is winding its way through Parliament, backed by the powerful Sir Charles Harkness, to outlaw the bomber squadrons and switch to ground-based artillery to combat the pirate threat, potentially grounding Jennifer's dreams for ever. And worst of all, she almost crashed Sphinx after dozing off at the deck on a routine mission. Having been put on probation, Jennifer despairs of ever returning to the skies again and making a difference to the world.

One hundred years later, at the height of the Atebus Revolution, twelve-year-old Jenny Hall is tired of it all. Politics bores her to death and she couldn't care less about her moon's struggle for independence from the homeworld -those are rich people's problems. She'd rather spend her time constructing a great iron dragon out of metal salvaged from the junkyard behind her shack, where she lives with her grandfather. Her biggest dream is to complete the dragon by her thirteenth birthday so that she can finally take to the skies like the rich kids in their flutterplanes.

But unknown to Jenny, her iron dragon, which she has christened Sphinx, contains the heart of the engine from a great heroine's plane...
