The best budgie friend a girl could have

We'd owned budgies before, but not for a number of years. I had my heart set on the washed out blue budgie sitting away from the others, even though Dad wasn't convinced this was the right budgie for us. But that's the bird I chose, and I just felt that it was the right choice. After playing 'hard to catch' and landing on the hand of the staff member who was trying to catch the budgie in a net, we finally had our bird in a small travel box. Normally when a budgie is in a travel box, they're quiet, but this one had other ideas. All the way through the store he was shouting and squawking, but when he arrived home, he didn't want to let go of his box. Even with the box tipped, he still didn't want to let go of the inside. A slightly steeper angle, and he flew from the box, landing on one of the new perches in his cage.

After a couple of days, we decided on the name Sid, which we later found out is apparently one of the harder names for a budgie to say, as they struggle with words beginning with S. I don't think Sid had ever read the 'rules' though, as he adored speaking.... even if any words beginning with S came out more like a drunken sh instead.

A few months later, Sid developed a weird crusty covering on his cere (nose) which I discovered was Scaly Face. Not a good sign for such a young bird, but the vet was very good and gave him the treatment, despite Sid not being used to being handled. When we brought him back from the vet, he sat on the perch with the metal bell from one of his toys resting on his head. I guess it was soothing for his skin, but it really looked like he'd been on a drunken night out and had a hangover!
We started saying Sid's been in the wars, poor old Sid to him as he was recovering, not thinking for a moment that he might consider learning it. Just a month or so afterwards, he started saying that phrase, and I think that's the time we realised just how bright he actually was!

I don't know why "bird brained" is a derogatory term - Sid was spectacularly bright, learning not only phrases, but the sound of a dripping tap, the spitting sound of sausages in the frying pan (which he would join in with), whistling, and even chirping a short tune! Things that you would expect to frighten a small bird, like a large bin bag being shaken to open it up ready for bin day, he actually adored - we had to crush the plastic bottles near the cage so he could chirp and drip to the sound.

But he didn't just learn phrases to repeat, he actually reworked some of the words he'd learnt, and made his own sentences. And rather than the gibberish I must have said when I tried learning a foreign language, Sid's phrases actually made sense.

Showers were one of his favourite pastimes, right up until the spring of 2016. He'd climb over the inside roof of the cage, hanging from the bars like a bat so he could get the water droplets over his front. You had to stand back when he landed back on the perch though, as he then would shake off the water like a small puppy.

The end
June 2016 wasn't a good month for Sid though. He started getting some health problems when he had his showers, and after the last one, rapidly went downhill. He held on for longer than I thought was even possible, still coming over to the side of the cage for a chirped chat, or coming over to see why I was in tears sitting by his cage. June 14th he simply stopped eating, and spent most of the day huddled behind his favourite toy. Not surprisingly, he didn't make the day, passing away just after 10pm. Thankfully he didn't seem to suffer long - despite the health problems he had, up until that last day, he still seemed happy for parts of the day, and the end wasn't long drawn out.

In Memory
Terracoon was zapped into a #2759 on June 14th 2016, then turned Chibi straight after, at 3:48pm Subeta time.
Renamed to Sid 10th August 2020
In memory of Sid the budgie: 22nd November 2008 - 5pm Subeta time 14th June 2016
