Captain of the Agency

He was there the day Deza and Kai-Tai stumbled through the front doors of the Academy. These were no cowed rookies in need of a backbone transplant. They were space-hardened travelers, weary of the world, though they were barely out of childhood.

Their father Damian had saved his life once. Sol had promised to look after the girls, to ease the pain of being abandoned by their father.

It quickly became apparent that Kai-Tai would do just fine. The younger of the two, she was charming, charismatic and quick to make friends.

Deza was quite another story.

She sassed her instructors. She mocked the older Cadets. She had the highest marks in her class yet she was constantly being demoted for sneaking around the halls after lights-out, hacking the lowest-security terminals to try to get a message out to her father.

He never responded.

Sol knew the loose vent where she liked to hide in the early morning hours when even the most dedicated maintenance droids were plugged in to recharge. Sometimes she would rant to herself in whispers, sometimes she would cry and sometimes she would just sit there quietly, staring at nothing.

He was careful to never let her see him skulking in the shadows.

As graduation day approached, Solarin surprised everyone in his department by volunteering as one of the heads for a new program believed to be entirely thankless. Protector Captains would likely have minimal chances for promotion and maximum volumes of brain-melting paperwork.

They were tasked with investigating the mysterious Snatchers, a group of criminals whose entire purposes seemed to center around kidnapping Earth children. The victims were the poorest of the poor, often without any family to notice when they disappeared. Those unfortunate parents who did notice were often too afraid to approach the daunting white towers that represented the United Countries Council in every corner of the world.

It was exactly the sort of program Deza was likely to favor.

Despite her father's wealth and status, she had been Snatched herself ten years ago. Nobody had ever determined the reason and Damian had spent the majority of his fortune to get her back safely.

Deza took one look at the snapshot tucked into the file Solarin had slid across his desk. Toby was only ten. His mother was close to losing her mind with worry and the local department had given up the case as hopeless.

She looked up with a nod. "Count me in...Captain."

Deza's first mission was a huge success.

Well...mostly.

Solarin rubbed the tender spot between his eyebrows where a headache was forming. "I've been asked to remind you that any damage to persons or property comes out of our budget. Please, Deza. Will you try not to blow up so many things next time?"

Deza looked at him like he was the crazy one. "I got Toby home safe and I saw to it those three pieces of Slyvian slime will never hurt another child. If the Council wants elegance and grace, tell them to put on ballet slippers and tutus. That's what I told them."

Solarin groaned. "You didn't actually say that to the Council...did you?"

"Um...I may have also accused one of their mothers of getting busy with one of those pig-headed colonists on Excalibur IX."

The statement wasn't a figure of speech. The colonists really did have pig snouts.

*****

Six months undercover on Vega for insubordination.

To some girls, living on a world of luxury resorts might have seemed like a vacation.

To Deza, it was the worst sort of punishment imaginable.

She didn't drink, smoke or gamble. She hated parties and considered concert t-shirts and worn-out blue jeans formal clothes.

She glowered at anybody - human or otherwise - whose gaze lingered too long.

Solarin watched her misery night after night on live feeds of casino security footage cameras. This was as much a punishment for him as her, though his superiors didn't know it. If anything happened, he was honor-bound to get Deza home safely. Yet his duties as Captain kept him trapped at a desk.

The night of the bust came at last. He'd never been so excited to sit through six hours of live surveillance footage.

Until he spotted Deza being bundled into a sporty black surface speeder.

Department Head Vorion agreed to his emergency request. Her time had been served and the Agency had a reputation to uphold. They could not have crime bosses thinking Junior Agents were theirs for the taking...even if the Agent in question had a big mouth.

Solarin found Deza two hours later, shaken but unharmed. She glared at him as if to chide him for interfering with a situation she clearly had under control.

When they were alone in the transport ship, she gave him a fierce hug and let go just as quickly. Her face was beet red as she took a sudden interest in the stars flashing by.

Solarin turned away so she would not see his smile.
