Story

There is a reason it is called a curse, rather than a blessing.

The Curse of Merana changed it all. Before, I was more than happy to frolic above water and socialize. Now… I prefer to not be seen by strangers.

The water is my home now, close to the shore. It has to be just deep enough to not be seen, but shallow enough to allow some light. Being on land is now out of my comfort zone. Where the ocean used to be the area where I was out of my element, dry land has taken its place. It is uncomfortable, especially during the day when the sun is hot- being dry is much more unpleasant than being wet. I was born Field; a vibrant green with light brown wings that were strong enough to lift me through the sky. Now, my wings are small and weak - built to help me glide through the water, not air. My world literally turned upside down.

Not much occupies my day, for the most part. I spend most of my time watching birds of all kinds, up and down the coastline. I admire them and their ability to fly - the way some glide, while others soar, and some flit around. It is nostalgic, and of course carrying a pang of regret and anger. Despite that, I like watching them swoop and circle; sometimes I can close my eyes and remember what it felt like to do those things myself. I also enjoy observing how some gather in pairs, in large flocks, and others just fly by themselves. Some are so social while others are completely anti-social. To both lifestyles I can relate.

Bird Watching is one of my few social activities; it may not seem like it, but it's nice to enjoy with friends. A few of us gather every other day at various location. All my friends are like me of course, Hyrdrus, Cursed. It is both an activity to occupy ourselves and socialize, since such occasions are rare. We like to share our admiration of the creatures, through various means. We discuss their qualities, differences, and for others, their minds are helpful for identifying the rarer birds and spotting the ones who blend in.

Just a week ago, someone approached us during such a meeting. That alone was strange, since most avoid the curse as though it was contagious.

Apparently some individuals want our help with the coastal birds…to observe and catalogue them. I didn’t catch all of it.

All I know is that for the first time, the Cursed feel a bit of hope, even for something as simple as watching birds take to the air.
