Vampa is a character in the german novel Nocturna by Jenny May Nuyen.
Everyone makes decissions based on their past, based on what they've already been through, based on their feelings and on other people's opinions. But when you don't have a past anymore, when you feel nothing and don't have friends you make decissions based on moments.

Darkness layed over the town. Marinus, the boy without a past, moved silently through the library. He had to find a book. Not a regular novel or anything you could find in a bookstore, he was looking for his bloodbook. The book with his story....
A long time has passed now since the man wrote a book with his blood and took away his memories and past. Shaking his head he moved on, this wasn't the right time to think about that. The candlelighr was only a small source of light and Vampa had to come close to the books to decipher their titles. Vampa, who doesn't know his real name, didn't had to read the titles. He had collected enough bloodbooks in the past to recognize one only by seeing it's cover. Some were old and shabby, some behind glass showcases and some hidden in places he'd never discover but what they all had in common was their dark red binding and the swirly font. In his little cell were many of these precious books piled up or just laying on the ground. The thin walls and poor isolation of his home wasn't becoming them well : his first books couldn't be read anymore; their covers that had been bloodred once were moist now and the titles impossible to recognize. The ink was fading away more with every raindrop that passed through the ceiling. Poor Alica, poor Tim and poor Lia. They would never get back their past. Vampa though didn't care about Alica's, Tim's or Lia's bloodbook. They weren't his. He had read them all and even though the stories had touched him the moment he read them he knew they weren't his. After finishing he could cut of his arm off without dying. He still woke up every morning and looked the same as he looked 9 years ago. Lost in thoughts Vampa skipped the shelfs that were open to the public, usual people would become insane reading a bloodbook. Once you start reading you cannot stop until you've read the very last word. They weren't usual stories but stories written in their main character's blood. Words become more than words - you feel them. if you already have a story you cannot deal with two. Looking for hidden-places and shelfs he heared a noise. Vampa stopped immediately and extinguished the candle. Complete darkness fell over him. He could hear his own heart beating fast, has he been too loud? After five minutes that felt like hours Vampa took a deep breath and put the candle on the ground. While lighting it he noticed a depp notch in the ground. Taken by curiousity he went down on his knees and tried to somehow pull the ground where the notch was. With a loud crack the ground barst and a bloodred book covered in dust surfaced. Vampa hesitated, this could be his book, his story, his life, his memories...finally. His small hands reached for it, he put the candle near to the title, blew the dust off the cover and opened the book.
