1 – Cryptic photo –

Looking at the photo on the floor, all you can see is a quick blur of… something. Whatever, or whomever it is cannot be deciphered. You wonder where it even came from or why there was an evidence marker sitting next to it. A fine mist of blood coats the image so you decide to leave it on the floor. No sense in getting your hands dirty.

2 – Photo album –

Pulling the cover back, the photo album is chock-full of photos from your past. Graduation from college, family get-togethers, even your wedding day. Tracing the edge of the photos you remember just how much joy your past holds. There are a lot of great times behind you, a life full of happy memories. It's not easy seeing this now as your life has changed so much over the last few years. Not everything has been so uplifting and happy lately, even if you force a smile and laugh to take the edge of sadness away.

3 – Photo of loved one –

As you pick up the photo from the kitchen counter, you feel your heart sink a little. The corner of the photo looks like it has been ripped away, obscuring part of the face in the photo but you’d know that face anywhere. You loved them from the second you saw that smile, the one that said everything was right in the world. You can’t remember the last time you really saw them smile like that, not without the sadness creeping into their eyes. Times have been tough lately, but you didn't realize just how tough until seeing this photo.

4 – Seashell –

The glint of the iridescent seashell catches your eye. You recognize it as a keepsake from one of the many trips you made down to the beach with your love. They always enjoyed spending time down by the ocean, soaking up the sun and walking along the shoreline to collect some of the more interesting shells and rocks. Something about watching the wind tousle their hair as they walked the beach had always brought peace to you. It has been years since the two of you have been down to the beach. The local shoreline has become so littered with garbage that it has been closed down and all the other beaches are just too far. Or at least that’s what you keep telling yourself to keep from the hassle of driving that far.

5 – Sea glass –

Another beach keepsake, but this one is different. The aqua-colored sea glass shimmer in the dim light, the lackluster appearance of it now tainting the memory the keepsake is attached to. It was the first time the two of you had gone on a date, the first time you kissed, the first time you saw that truly joyful smile curve over their lips. All you could think was how you wanted to remember this forever, remember what it felt like to kiss them, remember that exact smile and the shine in their eyes. That was everything you wanted in your life. You had scooped up some of the prettiest sea glass you could find and you gave it to them, placing the pieces in their hand and curling their fingers around the smoothed glass. The gesture had earned another of those memorable smiles from them. You had then whispered how much you wanted to see them again, and their smile was the only answer you had needed.

6 – Beach Sand –

A vial of sand sits on the edge of the counter, the corner of it broken away. Grains of sand slowly sift out of the vial and onto the floor. The sight makes you frown as you recognize it. It was the vial you and your love had used on your wedding day. Instead of the more traditional ceremony, they wanted to pour sand into a vial together, symbolizing the union of your life and theirs, the sharing of your love and future. It was appropriate because of their love of the beach and the feel of the soft sand between their toes. All you ever wanted to do was make them happy; it was your livelihood. Were they happy?

7 – Lock of hair –

The overall carnage and wreckage of the kitchen distracted you from seeing the lock of hair tied and set so precariously on the scale near the refrigerator. The color and length are near perfect to that of your love’s hair… can it be? No, no you don’t allow yourself to think that this mess has anything to do with your other half. They have to be safe… they just have to be. Reaching out to the lock of hair, your fingers brush over the strands and you realize the hair is damp. Even though the lock of hair is close to the sink, there is no way it could have gotten wet… What does it all mean?

8 – Blood trail –

The strange thoughts about the lock of hair cause you to look over to the pool of blood near the front door. There’s a lot of it – too much blood for someone to survive whatever happened here. The blood hasn’t been here long. It’s seeped into the carpet a little, staining the threads around it but it hasn’t dried, not completely anyway. Crouching down near it, you study the droplets and wonder what happened here that someone lost so much blood, here in your own home. Somehow you know you should be more disturbed by the sight than you are, but all you can think about is who the blood could belong to.

9 – Note –

Near the pool of blood, the handwritten note catches your eye and you reach out to grab it. The paper is thick between your fingers as you hold it, eyes glancing over the scrawled words there. The pen strokes are like art themselves, but the words written on the paper are like a song in your heart. Once in a while, they surprised you with a handwritten love note, a poem, a passage, something that made them think of you. It was their way of telling you they’d been thinking of you. The letters have become less and less as the years wore on and you always supposed it had to do with the newness of your relationship wearing off, but maybe it had been something else all along. Maybe, just maybe, the love had started to wane and disappear.

10 – Locket –

Next to the letter you notice the shimmer of a gold locket, a trinket you gave them so long ago you can’t be sure how many years it's been. The edges of the locket are worn and tarnished with time, showing its age. The hinge on the heart locket whines as you open it, reading the inscription inside. “Oceans apart, together in heart”; you’d had it specially made for them. Your job had taken you away from home, stolen your time away and it became more important than anything else. You always told them you loved them, no matter the distance between you. And really you did… but did they known that? Did they believe you?

11 – Police notebook –

The notebook on the ground is an unfamiliar sight. You look it over for a moment, heart skipping a beat as your reach out and pick it up. Blood is spattered across the open page, obscuring some of the notes but you are able to decipher some of the key phrases. “Ritual murder”, “drowned in bath-“, “post-mortem incision”, “carotid artery”. It doesn’t make a great deal of sense to you as you read the notes and the droplets of blood don’t help. Judging by the notes, whatever happened here wasn’t an accident. But what happened? And who was involved? You can only guess.

12 – Glass shard –

Something you didn’t notice before catches your eye; a piece of glass sparkling on top of the refrigerator. Avoiding the blood on the carpet, you walk to the refrigerator and reach up, taking the piece of glass in your hand. Turning it in your palm, the dried blood on the shard makes your breath catch. Before you can think, you drop the shard onto the floor. Was it the murder weapon? The police notebook had notes about an incision but you couldn’t make out what it said after that.

13 – Broken mirror –

The broken hand mirror on the ground has your throat tightening as you reach down to grasp the handle. A large shard is missing from the mirror but it doesn’t keep you from seeing most of your reflection. Reaching a hand up as you look into the mirror, you realize there are small droplets of dried blood on your face. Your fingertips tremble as they brush over the blood that decorates your skin. It’s been there long enough to dry but not long enough to lose that red tint that fresh blood holds. The memories come rushing back and flash before your eyes.

INTRODUCTION

Walking into the kitchen, it takes a moment for your eyes to make sense of what you're looking at. Tiny markers with numbers on them sit all around the kitchen and dining area, blood spattered across the furniture and floor; you just walked into a crime scene in your own home. What happened here? The question dogs your mind as you glance from marker to marker, each yellow sign standing watch over an article from your past. An eerie silence fills the room as you approach the first object.
