mage and strategist. grew up as a sort of an older brother figure to calhan. vandris is his plucky apprentice, though zarath isn't always sure how he much he enjoys their relationship.

a decent enough person but pragmatic to the point of coming off as cold or ruthless at times. also a bit self-involved; unlikely to go out of his way to do things for the sake of others unless it directly benefits him. growing up expected to follow in his parents' footsteps and serve as a court mage and adviser to the king, he has always felt a little disconnected from the common people, although he understands the logic in working to keep their favor and protect them (it is simply not personal for him, so much as a reasonable obligation.)

while not naturally an enormously talented mage, zarath's intelligence, thirst for knowledge, and perseverance make up for the struggles he has faced to improve himself. seems to be constantly researching something or another; he hates to be idle when there are so many things unknown; he would rather research the things that he knows he has no chance of being able to master than to remain ignorant of them. he has also, over the years, grown to have enough of a reputation for his insight and skill in analyzing all things magic that he feels as if it is expected of him, and pushes himself that much harder.
