It's all fun and games til somebody loses their mind...
How did I get here? you wonder as you lift your head off the ground. Where am I? you look at your surroundings and take stock of what you see.
The ground is mossy and peeking through the dirt is pattern of black and white tiles, like a chess board. To your right is a pathway leading into an over grown forest, eyes seem to reflect in the moonlight staring at you. To your left is a clearing with the remnants of a tea party from long ago.
Directly above you looks like a large hole that swirls smoke; black, white, blue, purple. It seems to hang in the large tree you're pressed against. The tree itself is gnarly and feels ancient. You use the old tree to pull yourself up, wincing slightly at the injuries you sustained in your fall. You take inventory and realize they're sprains, bruises at most but nothing too serious.
Limping slightly you begin to make your way to the abandoned tea party. A thick layer of dust covers the tea cups and plates, the sugar bowls and cream pitchers. As you draw nearer you swear you can hear maniacal laughter and the clinking of cups but shake it off as your imagination. You walk around the long table and notice different items in the chairs; a tiny sword in a small chair fit for a mouse, a large pocket watch in another chair along with a tweed jacket. As you make your way to the head you see two pathways presented before you behind the table. One looks like it's been traveled many times, the other looks new. There are no signs telling you where they lead but you are hesitant to proceed.
"Oh you must choose one if you wish to go to the land whence you came."
The sweet voice behind you startles you and you jump. The laughter you heard before comes to life again as you turn to see who spoke.
"Where are you?" you ask, as you see nothing that could've spoken to you. You feel a slight wind next to your left ear.
"Maybe I'm here," says the voice to your right. Another slight wind follows and you turn your head; "Or maybe I'm there, who knows?" This time the voice is on your left, you're sure of it! You turn and nothing is there.
"I am not in any mood for your games, show yourself!" your voice is more demanding than you've ever heard it but your insistence pays off. Before your eyes a hat appears; a floating hat. You take a step back and it follows you.
"No need to be rude, you're trespassing on my party you know", the voice says, not unkindly. As it speaks, a figure appears starting with a fluffy tail, grey with purple stripes. The body follows in the same colours and then the face; a mischievous grin and eyes a starling blue-green. She is a fox-like creature, with a large top hat and flowers on her body in the same colour as her eyes. As she blinks at you, grinning, you wonder to yourself if you are dreaming and shake your head as if that will make the creature disappear.
"I assure you this is not a dream, or is it a dream? What is up, what is down? Which path will you choose? One that makes you smile or makes you frown?" the fox spins in the air and floats to the chair at the head of the table. Slowly she descends down to sit and watching you, sips the tea you're sure wasn't there before.
"You say I must choose a path. Why?" you ask, unsure how to approach the creature. She giggles at you and sips her tea.>P>"You must choose in order to go", she replies.
"Go? Go where?"
"On, of course. But which will you choose? Up or down? Smile or frown? Who knows, who knows, who knows?" the creature giggles again as if she's told the greatest joke. You don't like the sound of this "on" at all.
"But which way is the right way? What if I choose wrong? Surely you can tell me what path is correct!" You're beginning to sound desperate and scared; you don't like uncertainty.
"Oh I could tell you, of course I could. But will I? No. The choice is yours but I leave you with this parting wisdom:
Down is up, up is down.
Even your smile is truly a frown.
Right is left and left is right.
Your sanity is an illusion, so hold onto it tight!
Which way will you go? Which way to turn?
One way is life, the other you will burn.
Don't trust your eyes, one thing is clear:
You know the truth; we're all mad here."
With that, the fox-like creature disappears leaving only her top hat and the two paths for you to choose.
