Hold on! Land in sight!

"Welcome to Merfolk Bay voyager!"

Our ship was approaching the bay, a long indented coastline, framed by two rocky hills on each side, where we could see the gateway to a few caves. Merfolk Bay was not a typical merchant city, at least in appearance it was not. It looked like a very rich city, though there were few trading posts, no production of anything, and it seemed impossible to decipher where wealth came from.

"Gold comrade! Gold!" - said the man that received us and showed the bay - "This is a coast of looting pirates! The North Ocean Merchant Company knows better than sail our seas. Why do you think they call this ocean forbidden?

"Merfolk Bay has a curious history that goes back centuries, but, if you want to know, this entire continent has a spectacular history - and legends about it, and fantastic legends about a hidden treasure. Many travelers still visit the continent in search of it.

"Well now you look interested!

"Yes, I can help you start your journey across the Island. The inhabitants of Merfolk Bay believe that the treasure is close to Windsdor Citadel, it's one of the richest cities in the continent. But you won't be able to overcome Narrow Peaks so easily. Perhaps something in the West Market can help you do that: pick up these galleons and go to the Market, you will find it on the map.
"
close and back to the map

Welcome to the West Market

This seemed like a medieval market, with all those tents scattered around selling whimsies, antiques and even magical items - were they real? And the most curious thing: many of them seemed to came exactly from your world.

You approach one of the tents. "You can see we have the most authentic items, we import all of them to the continent from the outside world. We constantly change what we sell, so if you like something, take the opportunity.

"You want to go to Narrow Peaks huh? Well, I see that you have enough for one item, so choose the one that meets your need, then go back to the map, and see if you chose right and your destination is visitable."

The Items on Sale

Welcome to Narrow Peaks

Narrow peaks are snowy rocky hills with both very high peaks and tricky trails at lower altitudes. It is a great barrier between the east and west of the continent for those who are not native.

But don't worry, you do well with your compass. Now you can go directly to Windsdor Citadel, if you take the old steam locomotive in the foothills of the mountains, or you can go visit Aspen Woods first - it looks like a quite interesting place! Make your choice and go back to the map, to your destination.

Welcome to Aspen Woods

Aspen is a small tourist town bordering the forest, with a rustic structure and dirt streets, a few houses, a few campsites, inns, restaurants and bars.

"Aspen survives from travelers who visit the forest looking for wild fruits, plants and sap to be sold at the West Market. The entire forest that surrounds us is virgin, and in it resides all kinds of living beings that still dwell in the Continent.

"In fact, a group just stopped by talking about getting magic potion ingredients in the forest to sell. You can visit the Market to see what's going on, or you can stay on your way to the Windsdor Citadel."

Make your choice and head to the map, to your destination!

Welcome to Windsdor Citadel

The city does not disappoint. The elven architecture ornamented with gold gave a tone of authenticity to the place. The city was covered with flowers, on the balconies, on the streets, on the streetlamps. The residents were slightly arrogant, but receptive and conversational. And they all seemed to be of the same opinion: the treasure was not there.

"I heard that the treasure may be in Iron Bay" - said a woman in a long, tight embroidery dress - "But you can't get there without going through Laguna, and you will need more galleons to rent a suitable boat there. Maybe it would be better to go through Monkuku first, and get some valuable goods? It's the only place you can get them for free."

Welcome to Monkuku

Monkuku was a picturesque Island - tropical with a touch of fantasy. First thing you see are colorful creatures walking with little discretion among thatched huts, and palm trees bearing strange fruits, and the waves almost touching the kiosks on the shore. You are greeted by a horde of one-eyed wild monkeys.

"Welcome! Welcome foreigner! You have an atypical appearance, don't you?" - they all laughed loudly.

"Help yourself with the fruits you want, we have them all in abundance anyway! As far as I know, you can trade them for galleons either at Eastway or at Darton Citadel. After you get the fruits, make your choice, head to the map, and look for your destination."

The fruits

Welcome to Eastway

Eastway is the merchant city of the continent east, and it serves as a point of exchange with the Orient. It seemed much more sumptuous than the West Market, with countless identical low-height kiosks made of natural stone, covered with polygonal tented roofs - everything surrounding a wide lake from end to end.

"I see you carry a unique selection of wild fruits with you, traveler. I can exchange them both for galleons or for an ancient magic tome. No one really knows what is written on it, but we think there is a wizard, who owns a tavern in Cordington, who may be able to read it. If you choose galleons, you can continue your journey to Iron Bay, passing by Laguna. If you choose the tome, better go to Cordington. Make your selection and go back to the map!"

Welcome to Laguna

Laguna is historically a fishing town, but it is also well known for its underwater landscapes: coralreefs over 50 meters long, wrecked ships abandoned under the sea, and caves where - the legend says - the mermaids of the south coast live. Just beyond the coast, however, the sea corridor that separates Laguna from Iron Bay is formed by rough waters, populated by dangerous marine animals. Luckly, Laguna people have long learned to build boats to travel from the peninsula to the Island. And they have great appreciation for galleons too.

"Your ship looks terrible, you will not be able to cross the strait with this. But don't worry, for a small price you can rent a boat here."

Welcome to Iron Bay

In the early 1000s, there was a great flow to the West World of oriental people who fled political-religious wars that ravaged their part of the world. At that time, Iron bay was reasonably isolated from the mainland, as it is surrounded by turbulent seas along its entire coastline. So there was little miscegenation here. What is very visible actually, considering the calm and quiet speech of the inhabitants, everyone's robes of vibrant colors, the typical songs playing in the cafes, and the home doors wide open, so that anyone can come in for a cup of tea. You are able to talk to a few people, but the most concrete answer came from a jewelry owner.

"The treasure has been here, probably. If it is as magnificent as they say, there must be oriental wealth there. But I don't know where it might be today. The last I've heard of it came from a Swan Island resident named James Mazin who passed throught here. He said something about a silver key and the prince of Ozryn, but I learn that the man went crazy shortly afterwards."

Welcome to Swan Island

Swan Island is in every which way a festive city. The shore is bordered by oddly shaped houses, without a single straight architectural line, and very close to each other. A lot of people are on the streets today, apparently it's some kind of holiday. A party is taking place in the main square - they are all wearing costumes.

If a man is to go crazy, it wouldn't be a surprise if it happened here - you think to yourself.

"I like your dirty modern pirate costume, mate" - said a girl dressed as a monkey.

You take advantage that everyone is on the street and asks for Mazin, though nobody seems to know him. He must have been one of those transparent ghosts that crosses the world without leaving a trace. But then you go into an alley, and you see a little sign: Mazin Brothers Inn. A very old man opens the door.

"Yes, James was my brother, he went to the continent years ago in search of the treasure. He came back shortly before he dies, and he gave me a key. He told me that, if I wanted to continue his research, I should go to Riverdale with the key. But well, I never did. I still have the key somewhere, if you'd like."

He hands you a giant bunch of keys. Clearly the brother just threw the key there, without giving it much meaning. Which one will would be the correct one? [take a key and try to get to Riverdale, on the map, to see if you got the right one!]

Welcome to Riverdale

Riverdale is located where the fertile lands of the merfolk plain meet the bifurcation of the Winderton River - the widest watercourse on the West World map -, and since this naturally gives it an advantageous place as a trading post (both for the continent and for overseas), the city is home to the North Ocean Merchant Company, since it was created in 1230. Riverdale has no roads, only canals, and all transport over long distances is by gondolas.

The first building you see when you arrive is the Company's headquarters, a one-story tall building with a long marble staircase and a crystal skylight at the top.

"Welcome to Riverdale!" - said a 5 feet tall man in a topper, at the bottom of the staircase. He stares at the key hanging from your neck. "Sorry sir, I didn't know you had a safe in the our headquarters. I will take you there!". After what looked like quite unusual but very rigid security barriers, you get to a wide iron door, with a small lock, perfect for your key.

Besides the ordinary belongings of someone who has been traveling for a long time, you find a close letter.

"If you are reading this it's because you have the key, and I'm long gone. I have few moments of clarity, so I will be brief. The prince of Ozryn knows where the treasure is hidden, but he doesn't know how to get to it. I believe I'm the man that came closest to it, yet I'm still looking for the answer to the riddle. I keep this letter here, in the hope that, one day, someone wiser and younger will find the answer."

Welcome to Ozryn

There was a time when Ozryn extended it's government to the entire continent, but today all cities in the West World are considered free, self-governing cities. During centuries, the wars over the throne weakened the centralization of power, and, as the enforcement of laws became less efficient, each place was forced to create its own rules. Still, Ozryn remains the largest and most influential of the West World Cities. Its perimeter is entirely surrounded by a stone wall, and its gates are guarded by two small dragons. The red castle, in the center of the city, is surrounded all around by a hedge maze, uniformed guards at each entrance. Nonetheless, despite the appearances, you heard the prince is generous and is always available to talk to the villagers.

"Yes, in my youth I was one of those deluded too. But then I inherited the throne and the wealth of the crown made me uninterested in the treasure. I didn’t pass on the knowledge back then because my youth adventures embarrassed my family, and I didn't do it later because I ended up believing that it could just be a legend after all. But, if you want to know, as far as I know, the treasure must be in Sunrise Island. But you can't get there sailing, because there are sea creatures inhabiting the Venvern Strait. If you want a tip, go to Euthoria, it's a city of engineers and inventors, they must have some way to get there."

Welcome to Euthoria

Euthoria is a floating city over a rocky cliff in the middle of the eastern plains, in a place where the ground opens in a circular crevice. Metal bridges connect the edges of the cliff to the city.

The city itself was unreal. Train tracks roamed the skies above three- or four-story houses, built in the Victorian style but made entirely of glass and steel. Here or there we could see taller and more unusual houses. One had a giant telescope protruding from the roof, other was shaped like a kettle and steam came out of it, and another was perfectly spherical.

You look to the sky: a zepelin is flying over your head. And that gives you an idea. You try to get the driver's attention, and it seems to work, because the airship is losing altitude.

"That seems a crazy idea, but you know, all my ideas have been crazy since I was born" - and nothing seems more true than that, you think to yourself. "Most of us never left Euthoria, we are mostly misunderstood in the rest of the continent.

Yet yes! Let's try to fly over Venvern Strait. I have no interest in the treasure, don't worry, I will just follow you for the adventure."

Welcome to the West Market!

"Welcome Back! Yes, a few adventurers came by and sold me some homemade alchemy ingredients, it looks like they made it with Aspen Woods materials - this is common actually, but they sell fast. There is an alchemist in Windshire, not very skilled but quite rich, who not only provides a good amount of galleons for the ingredients, but also some bottles of his magic potions for the help. Since you are becoming a frequent customer, I let you take one more item - on the house: choose it and go back to the map, to your destination!"

The Items on Sale

Welcome to Windshire

"What is it that you are carrying? I can use it in my magic recipes! Thank you for the items. Here you go, a bag of galleons. Also, I can give you a bottle of my potion to shrink, if you help me with a recipe.

"I heard that you are in search of the treasure? Well, there is a city of tiny people, Ravenport, who, as they say, can know where the treasure is. But no one goes there much because no one knows the roads that take there. Besides, big people are not welcome. I would recommend going through Mirador first, the city has a viewpoint, and from there you can see almost the entire Continent, you may figure the way to this tiny city. And who knows, you might not have a view of where the treasure is?

"Now, I need some help with this recipe. I can't seem to figure it out. The book says:

"Three of us are at your convenience,
"Let's call them one, two, three,
"- "In order but not in sequence,
"One of use holds only Tea,
"Last of it's line,
"Right side of three
"One contains poison, it's pretty obvious,
"and excluding this now you wonder,
"one and two?
"they're not prime numbers"

Choose the potions you want to put in the cauldron, once you have the recipe right a link will appear!

Welcome to Mirador

Mirador is a small town, that barely survives from tourism, on the top of a very high hill that plunges into a precipice. A little haunting but it has its charm. Close to the central square, where restaurants and hotels are located, there is a viewpoint. You put some galleons in it, and for a moment you imagine that the images are not real, they are drawings placed there. You point to the north and see a paradise Island with one-eyed monkeys. You point to the southwest and see a mythological creature sleeping among palm trees. Then you point west, and see a town of tiny people walking in the middle of tiny houses. So you follow the path to Ravenport with your eyes and make some notes on your map. Then you visit the smallest restaurant in the city and leave a generous tip for the local people.

Welcome to Darton Citadel!

Darton Citadel was an abandoned castle with scorched walls. The small shops in its surroundings had been abandoned as well. You wonder happened there.

You approach a building that looked like an apothecary, and a sign was on the door: we moved to Windshire after the big fire, if you are looking for magic potions you can look for us there!

How curious, how is that?

You can go to Windshire or try to go back to Eastway to sell your fruits. Make your selection and go back to the map, to your destination!

Welcome to Ravenport!

Before entering Ravenport, you drink the alchemist's potion. Then you take the path on the right at the last fork, until you reach the city Welcome Sign.

Despite the city being built with excellence, a few days talking with the citizens and you found out that it was governed by a parliament of doubtful political stability, with two parties taking turns in power - and at each swap, the entire economic policy and law system fell apart.

The current prime minister was said by a few to be a liar, and by others to be a brilliant man.

You decide to go and talk to the Prime Minister. You could only say he was a friendly and cordial man.

"The treasure is part of the popular culture of Ravenport. We believe that this city was built with gold from the treasure.

"There are two current legends in Ravenport, one says that the man who buried the treasure came from Merryport - that's the story of the opposition, and the other says that he came from Misty peaks - that's our story.

Which one may be true?

Welcome to Merryport!

Merryport is a seaside town on the Swan Coast, which is called so because it was discovered by the man who baptized the Island of the same name. It was one of the first cities to be occupied on the Continent. Nobody there uses galleons, all services and items are shared and everyone is equally poor - or rich. Nobody has any interest in the treasure - it seems that this is a false track.

"Last time we heard about it, was from a Swan Island resident named James Mazin that came by. He talked about a silver key and the Prince of Ozryn, but he left right away because he was horrified by our lifestyle. I wonder what happened to him?"

Welcome to Misty Peaks!

Misty Peaks was a village with few residents, at the foot of an endless mountain range.

"Yes, the man who buried the treasure was born here, more than two centuries ago. His name was Branor. From what they say, it is hidden somewhere on Sunrise Island. But some of us tried to cross the Venvern Strait and died - it is said that there are fantastic sea creatures there, that sink ships and enchant sailors to the bottom of the sea.

"If I were to try to get to Sunrise Island, I would go to Euthoria. That is a city of engineers and inventors, for sure they would invent a super powerful ship or something."

The man certainly said this in a mocking tone, but you were curious, and it never hurts to try.

Welcome to Cordington!

Cordington is a Gothic village, where all buildings have at least two floors and a tower, with colorful stained glass windows in the most unusual designs. Wizards walk on the streets with pointed hats and starry robes.

There are several taverns, but one of them have a wall inscription in the same language of the tome you have in your hands. So you enter this one.

"May I help you young man?" - he looks to the tome in your hands.

"How curious! That volume must be about two hundred years old, that's why it's in that language. It was written by a witch from here. It doesn't contain spells, actually. It's a diary. It is the life story of this witch, she spent her life traveling across the continent - learning the history of cities, and meeting people and their interests. This is not common for wizards, they are very self-centered.

You ask if there's anything about the treasure in the book.

"In the matter of fact, yes. It seems that this witch met the man who buried the treasure. She met him in Misty Peaks, it looks like he had come home just before he died. There is not much else about it.

You gladly thank the wizard and leave the tavern.

Welcome to Sunrise Island

Sunrise island is a completely desert island. Now you suppose you could have guessed that the treasure was there all this time, but at least you could get to know the continent!

You roam the island looking for a clue, and suddenly you know where the treasure is. There is a sphinx, mythological, frightening, inert, guarding the edge of a cave. You approach and she wakes up.

"Yes traveler, you have found the treasure! And it will be all yours if you find the answer to the following riddle:"

I have castles but no walls, I have islands but no trees, I have mountains but no rocks, I have forests but no trees. What am I? [one word, first letter is uppercase]

Branor was born in Misty Peaks and he was obsessed with treasures - rather for the mysticism that involves them than for the wealth they contain. He did everything to turn his treasure into a legend across the continent, which is why they still talked about it today. He started out as a Misty Peaks blacksmith, but soon left town to Merfolk Bay. His natural leadership and rampant ambition soon made him one of the greatest pirates of all time.
