A View Point

"... Do you understand?" the capo said, having just finished up his explanation of the next assignment.

Caedos nodded, not giving any verbal indication of his understanding, and waited to be dismissed. He could tell that his silence unnerved his boss, but it was assumed that he was a mute. Caedos had no inclination to dispel that rumor, and besides, unnerving people was a good talent for his line of work.

"Very well then. Carry on."

Inclining his head slightly, he left the office. As he opened the door, he suddenly found himself face-to-face a woman on the other side, her hand reached out for the doorknob. Her fingers almost grazed against his abdomen, but he flinched away.

"Ah, sorry!" she exclaimed cheerfully.

He buried his head in his scarf, which was dark like the night sky, and sidled around her. "Hey, I really didn't mean to offend!" she called after him. Women made Caedos nervous, though, and he could feel a hot flush creeping on his face. It was a small interaction, but almost feeling her fingers on his skin filled him with embarrassment.

Once he left the building entirely, though, he was able to shake the feeling off. He had to. He had a job to do.

He was an orphan, having lost his parents for unknown reasons to assassins. At the time of the attack, he hadn't known what to do with the sudden void in his life. If he thought about it too much, it filled him with sadness. Instead, he fueled that feeling into anger, and he had joined the same organization that sent out his parents' killers, hoping for a clue about who he needed to exact his revenge on.

Due to their line of work, however, people kept to themselves. They got their work from their individual capos and didn't share who their next target was or who their past targets had been. It wasn't a book club here; there was no place for friendship.

Caedos had taken the strategy of being silent. He could slip through the building unnoticed, as he never did anything to be worthy of others' attention. Still, he hadn't even been able to eavesdrop on a conversation about his parents. All he needed was one hint, just something to go off.

It was that desire that kept him going in his line of work. Admittedly, he had gotten very good at hunting and tracking. Due to his silent nature, he was most frequently sent out on missions that required a high level of sneak.

And now was one of those times. The office building that served as their base -- not the main base, of course, but a small branch -- was set in an unassuming town conveniently situated between a number of larger cities. It was also settled around a large forest that included drop offs far too deep for police investigation. A perfect setting for any number of criminal activities, including ones Caedos's organization wasn't responsible for.

Caedos had decided when he became an assassin that he would never kill without reason or for poor reasons. He preferred assignments where, just for a minute, he could fuel his anger and feelings of helplessness out on someone who deserved it. It was an escape for him, because he had no other. He couldn’t even sleep at night, lest dreams of his parents’ deaths haunt him again and again. Luckily, his boss understood the value of that mindset, and sent Caedos on missions that warranted rage.

This night was such a night. His target was a local drug dealer whose financial success had made him egotistical, and therefore, an annoyance to far more powerful people. A worthy target, Caedos decided, considering the level of harm such an individual inflicted on people who had no method of defense. Kids. Maybe even kids like him.

He slunk out into the forest, toward the small clearing where most drug deals took place. The "buyer" was a decoy, someone from Caedos's organization, so Caedos knew that the buyer was never going to show. Caedos was aware that his organization made it clear that the buyer was a hot shot who wanted personal attention, but that didn't mean the target was going to follow through. He had to be sure, though, that his target was the dealer he was sent after. Not just some fall guy, sent out to protect the actual dealer from his own cowardice.

Creeping forward, he silenced his movements and his breathing as much as possible. It was a waiting game now. Was it the right person? Was this the right time?

The man grew fidgety and nervous as the minutes ticked by. It hadn't been long, but these deals weren't supposed to be long. In. Out. And we were never here. Caedos watched as the man flipped open a mobile phone and spoke in low, angry tones. He could only catch bits of the conversation. But it was enough.

Suspicion confirmed. With that, Caedos struck.

And he was never there.
