born a fox ???

fox culture {worldbuild} ultimate being for a spirit is transcendence/reincarnation, something that humans are gifted with and take for granted.

requires much internal cultivation

< cultivation > can be used for either good or evil, up to the user.

very few fox communities left in the world

ERGGG

young fox spends her cultivation pts on her love of a sage-prince of a war-torn country. she strikes a deal with the heavens for a peaceful life and long lineage for her love, in exchange for her servitude to guardianship of a powerful weapon that gods and demons may not wield.

-----

Once upon a time in an ancient wild land, there was a legend of a powerful sabre with great power over destiny.

..............

Not all souls have the fortune of being born human. Being born human is a gift - of freedom, of opportunity, but ultimately, a gift of transcendence and reincarnation. Most other creatures have as much choice in life as a human, or as much affect on the world around them; creatures that linger on in the world long enough to enjoy similar priveleges as the average human must absorb demonic [yao] energies, and cultivate their /souls/ for transcendence. Even a worm can hope to become a dragon.

Our little spirit was born to a world still wild and largely untouched. Her parents were nameless ordinary foxes, as were her offspring and their offspring and so on. When her first ember hair turned silver, she named herself [ChiFeng], the Scarlet Gale, the Bare Wind. Befriending other yao of the forest, many who have now passed to other worlds, she learned to speak and cultivate her kindling yao spirit energy.

======================

The truth of this world is that humans, animals; yao spirits, and sage gods are not so different. True, animals do not have much intellect or abilities for speech like humans do until they ascend to a yao, but humans can also seek to transcend in their same lifetimes into a higher form of being by cultivation. Similarly to yao, very humans also achieve this sort of power - and pseudoimmortality; however unlike animals who might naturally become yao, it is nearly impossible for a human to become a sage without training under a Master sage. Shifu-tudi [master-disciple] relationships between humans and sages, as well as between green yao and elder yao, are commonplace.

It wasn't entirely unnatural that ChiFeng would be interested in taking a following of a great sage. Fox spirits of her cultivation level weren't uncommon, at least not as uncommon as the humans who sought out discipleships of sages or their cults.
