Upside down and backwards. It seems so complex, but in reality, it is absolutely straightforward. That's all it is: upside down and backwards. It's as if it was created to be a metaphor for my life. I was born in the wrong time. I feel like I'm going 100 miles an hour into the past, and my future is 180 degrees from normal.

Can you imagine what it must have been like to be the first person to discover the phenomenon that is camera obscura? Who would have thought that a tiny hole was all it took to make an inverted mirror image of life on the other side? Can you even imagine? It's trippy to think about now, but it must have been nothing short of a miracle well over 2000 years ago.

Sure, photography has grown and become so much more complex since, but the age old camera obscura is still as simple as always. It's a cinch. Just block out all of the available light in a room, cut a small hole in the covering over a window, and the light from outside will shine in, and bring what is outside in with it. You might have even done it in school when you were younger--poking a hole in a piece of paper and letting it project an eclipse on the ground safely for you to view.

It's so interesting to think that it took about more 2000 years for anyone to start figuring out how to preserve images, and another 100 to actually succeed. I yearn to have lived in a time when I could have been the one discovering photographic breakthroughs. I have my fun experimenting with vintage cameras, but I still feel upside down and backwards. I fantasize about these amazing tools being new, about the technology being mind blowing, about feeling truly blessed to have science working in my favor from every direction. No one even appreciates the beauty of the process anymore. I feel the edges of every camera as if it was brand new. A treasure appreciated as it should be.

My life is silver. From plates to photographic paper, everything I dream of seems to materialize in silver one way or another. Silver is what makes this all permanent. It's what keeps me grounded.
