Davy stood waist deep in Veta Lake, leaning over and surveying the fish that flitted around his legs. He strode further into the lake until the water reached his chest and checked to make sure the fish from the shallows were still swimming nearby. They were, and even larger fish had joined the schools swirling around him. He glanced from side to side to make sure no one was looking before bending over so that his mouth almost touched the surface of the water.

“Can you guys here me?” Davy asked tentatively. A loud, resounding chorus of I can hear you filled his head. “Good. How many of you are there listening to me right now?” Fifty-seven. Davy was pleasantly surprised; that was twelve more than the time previous. “Alright, listen closely. I’ve come to warn you that there is a massive fishing tournament coming here in two days; tell your friends and families to stick to the shallows or the very deep water and be careful what they bite at.”

He felt a little silly talking at the water but he was used to it by now and he had to deliver this message. Davy had tried to warn the tournament managers and sponsors that Veta Lake had a very delicate ecosystem that could be damaged if a large amount of the fish population were removed but they refused to listen.

This was the only alternative he had, and he found a smug satisfaction in undermining their plans. For the past three days Davy had come out to the lake and given the fish the same message; he wasn’t certain how good their memories were or how many fish his warning was reaching so he figured repetition couldn’t hurt. As he turned to wade out of the water he froze.

A girl was standing in the shallows watching him with her head cocked slightly to the side. Did she see me talking to the fish? Davy wondered and worried. He finally decided to just play it cool and act like he hadn’t been doing anything supernatural as he waded out. As soon as he reached the shore, though, his plan fell apart.

“You were talking to the fishies, weren’t you?” asked the blond teenage girl whose green dress had splotches of paint covering it. Javid flinched when she asked the question and his mind started racing to come up with a decent excuse. “It’s okay,” the girl said after a few moments, interrupting his thoughts. “I can do something strange too.”
“You can?” Davy asked before any skepticism crept into his conscious.

“Yep. I can paint the future. My name’s Ketone and your name’s Davy isn’t it?” she said with a grin. “And before you ask, I know your name because I’ve painted you before. I think you should come with me. There’s someone I’d like you to meet who would appreciate what you’re doing for the lake. He lives up there.” She pointed up at a massive mansion sitting on one of the many hills that surrounded the body of water. “C’mon. He’s waiting.”
