A fisherman was alone in a rowboat, a little ways from shore. It was dusk, but he had no intention of returning yet; he wanted to catch a couple more fish--besides, the sea was always more beautiful under the moon.

He cast another line and began to slowly reel it in, humming an old folk song. The hums turned to soft words as he raised his eyes to the sky, staring up at the purple-gray blanket, pin-pricked here and there with a few emerging stars. Below, the sunlight-crested sea lapped soothingly at the sides of his boat, its constant rocking rhythm calming the fisherman.

Suddenly, he heard another voice with his own--a beautiful, lilting feminine tone, making perfect harmony with the notes of the song. Startled, he looked around for the voice, but he needn't look far.

She had pulled herself up on the edges of the boat and was looking at him with a sweet, almost curious gaze. Her eyes were a golden-brown color, and she appeared to be naked, though all he could see of her were her shoulders. He stared at her in awe and surprise. His voice died in his throat, but hers continued, and it echoed in his mind, calming his nerves, but at the same time, making him excited. I want to kiss her, he thought, and the notion surprised him--he had a wife at home, whom he loved. But this girl... she was beyond beautiful. The way the dying sunlight shone on her skin, and the way her long black lashes framed those gorgeous eyes, and her song, still clear and perfect in his ears...

Without thinking twice, he leaned forward, reaching for her. He didn't realize that she was slowly backing away, slowly lowering into the water. He would reach as far as he had to to get to her.

Suddenly, his face broke through the water, and looking down at her, she appeared suddenly dangerous. Her eyes no longer looked like honey, but rather like a topaz glinting in the firelight. Her features looked sharper, and he caught a glimpse of gills behind her ears that weren't there before. Her mouth opened in a silent hiss, and he saw that her incisors were noticeably long and sharp. And with a shock, he realized that, instead of legs, she had a long, silvery tail, waving through the water as naturally as seaweed.

Without warning, she grabbed him, and they were falling, falling through the ocean, down, down, down...
