"What a big dream for such a little bear."

UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Ever since he was a wee little cub, Orion had always loved the stars. Every night when his siblings were asleep and the sky was clear, he'd sneak outside and just lay in the grass, staring up at the glittering sky. For hours he'd watch the small dots flicker and dim and dance in the sea of the universe until his mother came out and yelled at him for wasting precious hours of sleep.

"Don't waste your time with something so far away. Focus on what's happening on this planet,"

she'd say. So he'd go back to sleep, only to sneak out again the next night.

One day Orion and his father were out playing in the yard. He looked up at the cloudy blue sky and frowned. His dad frowned too.

"What's wrong, Orion?" he asked.

"I can't see the stars."

His dad chuckled and tossed him the football they'd been playing with. "Of course not, silly. It's daytime."

He caught the ball and tossed it between his hands, still looking up, deep in thought.

"One day I'm going to go to space and travel to all of the galaxies of the universe," he proclaimed. "Then I'll become friends with all the constellations!" he added happily and threw the ball back.

His dad just laughed again. Orion liked his dad. He was much more supportive than his mother. He didn't yell at him for 'wasting time.' "That's a mighty big dream there, bud. Do you want to be an astronaut?"

"No." Astronauts did boring things like circle planets a million times and fix ships and were stuck inside a spaceship most of the time. He didn't want to do that.

"I want to be a space bear!"

Many years passed. While most of his peers went off to college, Orion stayed at home. He didn't want to bother with tedious things like calculus and physics. Not even astronomy. He had already learned much about the night sky when he was younger, borrowing books from the library and reading them under the covers at night. The other bears laughed at him for his silly dream, all growing up with real aspirations and careers, but Orion didn't care. His eyes were set on the stars.

He just had to figure out how to get there.

In the meantime, Orion busied himself with odd jobs here and there, playing his harmonica, and helping his father with his berry delivery business. But as time went on, things began to take a turn for the worst. A new company in the area started selling bigger, juicier, sweeter berries, which inevitably caused his dad's business to go bankrupt. His dad ended up at a low-end job and not too long after, both of them were out of work. Orion's mother, saddened by their outcome, chided Orion for not listening to her.

"See what happened? If you had done what I said, you'd have a nice job and things wouldn't be this way."

Orion felt devastated after that. He tried for months to get another job, but it was fruitless. Almost ready to give up, he went out to the park where he would go at night to sit on top of the big hill there and pray to the stars, wishing for things to get better. But that night he just looked up at the starry sky. After a while he began to feel anger and hatred toward them. "It's all your fault. You made me think I could be up there with you," he said begrudgingly. The stars just flickered in response. He growled. They were laughing at him, mocking him.

He was ready to give up his foolish dream when something flashed across the sky. It was a shooting star! The first one he'd ever seen in all of his years stargazing. He followed the star and watched it and watched until--- wait a minute. It was getting closer! The closer it got, the more his eyes widened in astonishment. It was a space ship! It landed a few feet away from him, steaming with smoke from entering the atmosphere. It wasn't a big ship at all-- actually it was more like a capsule. A very small capsule. In the shape of a... banana? But Orion was still afraid to go near it. What if it was an alien with superpowers coming to abduct him?! He watched, frozen, as the door opened and---

a tiny monkey climbed out.

"Huh?"

Orion stared at it disbelieving for a few seconds. It looked almost like a baby one, and it oddly was wearing a spacesuit with helmet and all as it stepped onto the ground, seemingly unaware of his presence. He didn't understand, as it looked like the kind of monkeys that were on Earth.

"Um, who are you?"

Orion asked cautiously.

The monkey looked up at him with its head tilted to the side. It hesitated, then bounded over to the bear and jumped up onto his knee.

"Why, I'm the Space Monkey, of course!"

Orion blinked. The monkey sighed in despair and sat on his knee. "I fling poo."
